Project Based Research

This module supports students in undertaking an independent research project within the built environment and construction project management, focusing on a current and relevant industry issue.

Learning begins with the development of a clear research topic, supported by critical engagement with academic and industry literature. Students are guided in forming research aims, objectives, and appropriate methodologies, including qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods approaches.

The module then progresses to data collection, analysis, and interpretation, enabling students to synthesise findings and draw meaningful conclusions aligned with their research problem. Emphasis is placed on academic writing, critical evaluation, and the production of a professional research report that meets industry and academic standards.

For blended or part-time modes, delivery includes guided independent study, virtual or in person supervision, and milestone-based progress reviews, ensuring flexibility while maintaining academic rigour.

Learning Methods

This module is delivered through research workshops, seminars, supervision meetings, and guided independent study, supporting students through each stage of the research process. Learning activities focus on literature review, research design, methodology selection, data analysis, critical evaluation, and professional report writing. Students receive structured academic supervision, milestone feedback, and opportunities for discussion on current built environment and construction project management issues. Teaching is designed to develop independent inquiry, critical thinking, and evidence-based problem-solving, ensuring students are fully supported in producing a high-quality professional research report aligned with academic and industry expectations.

Independent Study

Independent study is central to this module, involving self-directed research, literature review, data collection, and analysis. Students manage their own project timeline, refine methodologies, and develop their research report, supported by supervision and feedback, while strengthening critical thinking, academic writing, and evidence-based decision-making skills.

Assessment

The module will be assessed through a dissertation.

This module strengthens progression into research-led, consultancy, and strategic roles across the built environment, construction, infrastructure, sustainability, and project management sectors. The advanced skills developed in critical analysis, research design, data interpretation, and professional reporting are highly valued in roles such as Project Management Consultant, Research Analyst, Built Environment Advisor, Sustainability Consultant, Digital Construction Specialist, and Strategic Planning or Policy roles.

For professionals already working in construction project management, the module enhances capacity for evidence-based decision-making, innovation, performance improvement, and organisational change, supporting progression into senior project, programme, and leadership positions.

Standard Entry Requirements

Relevant industry experience and/or a good honours degree.

Successful completion of all four MSc Construction Project Management modules is also needed:

Applicants whose first language is not English should have an IELTS of 6.5 overall, with no component lower than 5.5, or an equivalent.
