Project Planning and Control

This module develops a comprehensive understanding of project planning, control, and delivery processes, guiding students through the full chronology of a project from initiation to completion. Learning begins with planning fundamentals, including scope definition, work breakdown structures (WBS), time and cost estimation, and project budgeting. Students then explore resource management, scheduling techniques, and the use of modern IT tools for project planning and control.

The module also focuses on project monitoring and control, including performance measurement techniques such as earned value analysis, alongside change control processes, quality management systems, and post-project evaluation. Throughout, students critically assess how these tools and strategies contribute to successful project outcomes.

Learning Methods

This module is delivered through a blend of lectures, seminars, practical workshops, software demonstrations, and case-study discussions. Learning activities focus on project scheduling, resource allocation, budgeting, monitoring, and control using modern planning and project management software tools. Students engage in applied exercises involving WBS development, earned value analysis, change control, and quality review techniques, supported by guided independent study. Teaching is further strengthened through industry-led guest input and real-world project examples, helping students connect theory to current professional practice in project delivery, digital planning, and performance management.

Independent Study

Independent study includes directed reading, software practice, and analysis of project case studies. Students develop skills in planning, scheduling, and control tools, apply techniques such as WBS and earned value, and progress their project delivery plan, reinforcing learning through research, reflection, and self-managed problem-solving.   

Assessment

The module will be assessed through a portfolio.

Staff Delivering on this course

This course is delivered by a highly experienced built environment teaching team with strengths in procurement, contract administration, project delivery, and digital construction. Teaching combines research-informed academic expertise with live industry experience, ensuring students benefit from both current theory and practical application. The team’s involvement in real-world consultancy, professional practice, and work integrated projects brings contemporary relevance to learning. In addition, selected sessions are enhanced by guest lecturers and industry specialists, offering insight into current procurement routes, contract frameworks, BIM-enabled delivery, and evolving challenges within the construction and built asset sectors.

Academically, this module provides a strong foundation for progression into advanced study in Project Management, Construction Management, Engineering Management, Business Analytics, or Digital Construction programmes, including honours and postgraduate degrees. It also supports professional development toward chartership with organisations such as the Association for Project Management, Project Management Institute, and Chartered Institute of Building.

Standard Entry Requirements

Relevant industry experience and/or a good honours degree.

 English Language Requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English should have an IELTS of 6.5 overall, with no component lower than 5.5, or an equivalent.
