Risk Management

This module develops a critical understanding of risk management principles and their practical application within project environments, particularly in construction and complex project scenarios. Students begin by exploring the concepts, categories, and organisational context of risk, including how risk culture and governance structures influence project outcomes. Learning then progresses through the full risk management process, covering risk identification, qualitative and quantitative analysis, probabilistic assessment tools, response planning, mitigation strategies, and performance monitoring.

A key area of study is the integration of Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) risk management into project plans, including legal duties, compliance requirements, duty of care, auditing, and management review. Students also evaluate decision-making in sensitive and high-risk projects, developing guidance for effective risk management processes and organisational responsibilities.

Teaching is typically delivered through lectures, seminars, applied workshops, case-study analysis, and individual presentation preparation, supported by industry-informed examples. For online delivery, emphasis is placed on guided online learning, virtual case studies, and milestone-based presentation development.

Learning Methods

This module is delivered through lectures, seminars, workshops, case-study analysis, and applied risk exercises, supporting the development of practical risk management skills. Learning activities focus on risk identification, analysis, response planning, HSE integration, and decision-making in complex project scenarios. Assessment consists of one individual presentation, enabling students to demonstrate critical evaluation, professional communication, and applied risk management competence. 

You will learn via our online virtual learning environment, Moodle which provides you with lectures and course materials and allows you to study from any location.

Independent Study

Independent study includes directed reading, risk case-study analysis, and research into qualitative, quantitative, probabilistic, and HSE risk tools. Students use this time to prepare their individual presentation, evaluate complex project scenarios, and strengthen decision-making through reflective learning, legislation review, and self-managed risk planning exercises.

Assessment

The module is assessed through an oral assessment and/or presentation.

Staff Delivering on this course

This course is delivered by a highly experienced built environment teaching team with strengths in procurement, contract administration, project delivery, and digital construction. Teaching combines research-informed academic expertise with live industry experience, ensuring students benefit from both current theory and practical application. The team’s involvement in real-world consultancy, professional practice, and work integrated projects brings contemporary relevance to learning. In addition, selected sessions are enhanced by guest lecturers and industry specialists, offering insight into current procurement routes, contract frameworks, BIM-enabled delivery, and evolving challenges within the construction and built asset sectors.

This module supports progression into a wide range of commercial, procurement, and project delivery roles within the built environment, construction, infrastructure, and consultancy sectors. The knowledge gained in procurement strategy, contract administration, and risk evaluation is highly relevant to careers such as Assistant Quantity Surveyor, Procurement Coordinator, Contract Administrator, Commercial Manager, Project Manager, Bid/Preconstruction Specialist, and Construction Planner.

A strong understanding of modern procurement, and collaborative frameworks also strengthens pathways into roles linked to digital construction, BIM management, supply chain coordination, sustainable project delivery, public projects including NHS projects. These skills are increasingly valued by contractors, consultants, developers, and public-sector clients.

Standard Entry Requirements

Relevant industry experience and/or a good honours degree.

 English Language Requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English should have an IELTS of 6.5 overall, with no component lower than 5.5, or an equivalent.
