Construction Project Management

Stages 1 & 2

You will be introduced to the core discipline and processes of Construction Project Management theory and practices. You will develop an understanding of how to manage complex design processes from concept design through Building Information Systems (BIM) to detail design, procurement, construction and post completion maintenance and decommissioning. Skills in consultancy and research in the Architecture Engineering and Construction (AEC) sector will be enhanced.

Stage 3

Work-based Experience Route

Full time on campus students only

You have the option to engage in work-based experience for a period of up to 16 weeks, without the need to extend the overall duration of your study. Opportunities exist with regional and national contractors of differing scales. You will gain experience and gather information relevant to the completion of a 8 – 10,000 word research document.

Dissertation route

Full time on campus and online students

You will undertake an industry based research dissertation of 12-15,000 words which if appropriate, will normally be integrated into your place of work. The dissertation will develop your skills and intellectual abilities in the investigation, assessment, evaluation and interpretation of a variety of relevant source materials.

On Campus Study

You will learn through a mixture of teaching and learning methods including lectures, tutorials, workshops, seminars, practical work, case studies, simulations and games. Access to our virtual learning environment, CampusMoodle, is also provided giving you access from home to learning materials (including e-books, journals and audio visual resources).

Online Learning Study

This online course is taught through CampusMoodle, which offers you flexibility of where and when you can study. No attendance is required on campus.

CampusMoodle provides a virtual classroom to deliver the equivalent of on-campus face-to-face staff/student contact. You will learn through case study materials, web links, video footage, group discussions and core reading. Systems such as Skype are used to hold online tutorials, guest presentations, virtual site visits and interviews.

• Lectures - 15-20 full-time students per group, 12 hours per week / 6 hours per week online learning
• Seminars - 15-20 students per group, variable hours (within the lecture hours) per week / 1 hour online learning per week
• Webinar - 1 hour online learning per week
• Tutorial - 15-20 full time students per group, variable hours (within the lecture hours) per week / 1 hour online learning per week
• Independent Study - 15-20 full-time students per group, variable hours (within the lecture hours) per week

• External Visits - 15-20 students per group, variable hours (within the lecture hours) per term

How long is a Construction Project Management course?

The MSc Construction Project Management course can be successfully completed between 12 - 36 months, in which the opportunity to receive the necessary skills are obtained.

Assessment

Typically students are assessed each year:

Full Time

Year 1

• 24 written assignments, including essay
• 1 dissertation

Online Learning

Year 1

• 12 written assignments, including essay

Year 2

• 12 written assignments, including essay
• 1 dissertation

Year 3

• 1 dissertation

Independent Study

Individual research will involve the use of numeric and written communication skills, as well as presentation and discussion in module coursework and in the dissertation module.

We aim to provide you with feedback within 20 working days of hand-in for all written exams, coursework and practical exams.

Standard Entry Requirements

What is needed to study MSc Construction Project Management?

• Applicants normally hold a 2:2 undergraduate honours degree or its equivalent.
• Applicants with a lower degree classification and / or relevant work experience will be considered on a case by case basis.

English Language Requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English should have an IELTS of 6.5 overall, with no component lower than 5.5, or an equivalent.
