This short course is designed for managers and professionals seeking professional development opportunity. Participants would delve into the intricacies of business opportunities of low-carbon energies including the industry structure, market framework, energy policies, financing, risk management, regulatory mechanisms and technologies.
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
- Critically appraise the key issues pertaining to renewable and sustainable energy and develop a critical perspective of how the sector is developing and the ways in which it will continue to evolve.
- Critically evaluate the electricity market framework, e.g., in the UK, and the policy instruments and discourse in addressing regulation to create demand pull for new technologies to bring them into the generation mix.
- Create a reflective approach to examining the debates in renewable/sustainable energy management in the electricity, industry and transport sectors and demand side considerations.
- Critically analyse the key issues within the renewable energy sector including financial, commercial, technological, political and regulatory practices developing across this sector.

Learning Methods
This module is delivered entirely online through the University’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), Moodle. The course will begin with a short online induction and introductory session, followed by a structured timetable of topic content. Each topic will be delivered through a combination of online lectures, seminars, discussion forums, and interactive activities, which participants can engage with at their own time and pace. Active participation in the online learning environment, including interaction with classmates and tutors, will be an integral part of the course experience.

Independent Study
Materials and exercises are available online, allowing participants to study flexibly and independently at any time or in any place around existing work and life commitments.

Staff delivering on this course
The short course will be delivered by highly experienced staff who have received four consecutive annual award nominations and have been recognised with distinction by the RGU:Union Support and Teaching Awards. The teaching staff actively supervise doctoral research in the field and deliver teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The expertise include renewable energy management, taught on the MSc Energy Management, MSc Energy Transition and Sustainability, MSc Renewable Energy Engineering and MEng Renewable Energy Engineering programmes.
Assessment
The course is assessed through a written report.
