Consider BIM and its applications for the built environment. Explore BIM at the conceptual design stage; cross discipline design; shared BIM models; BIM during the construction stages; CDE, technical issues; virtual prototyping; BIM protocol; interoperability; building data storage and accessibility; smart data workflow: digital construction and transformation.
This course aims to provide an introduction to the application of BIM in practice.
BIM, as a core part of digitization, is at the foundation of change in our industry. It will deal with key documents which have emerged in recent years and consider how these have been referred to by industry and the Professional Bodies.
The subject of BIM application requires a learning curve that encompasses theory, legislation, and practice, and the course will deal with various stages of the design-construction management life cycle. By which, it develops a sustainable approach to asset creation and management. This can be essential for project decision-making hierarchy and implementation. Therefore, one can argue that the basic ethos behind BIM is centred on the understanding of shared data, shared responsibility, and collaborative working.
In developing your understanding of BIM and with your engagement and participation, you will be able to demonstrate your ability to:
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of the utilisation of BIM during the architectural (multi discipline) design phase, from concept to detail design, including smart data workflow.
- Apply BIM as a vehicle to manage activity during the construction phase, including proactive response to technical and contractual issues.
- Critically appraise the value of BIM throughout the occupied life cycle of a building.
- Evaluate the challenges inherent in providing building information models in a form which is interoperable, across disciplines.

Learning Methods
You will study within a global group of professionals employed within the various construction industries. There are weekly opportunities to enter into online discussion forums to discuss topics and exchange views and experiences, thereby providing a broader worldly interpretation and application of the knowledge provided. A series of study guides will lead you. All learning material, activities, and reading resources are available online via the module.
You will learn via our online virtual learning environment, CampusMoodle which provides you with lectures and course materials and allows you to study from any location.
As well as your Tutor, you will also have your own dedicated e-advisor who will assist you in accessing and engaging with the online material.
Independent Study
All learning material is provided and students will be expected to work through this material independently before participating in discussion with fellow students, completing activities and undertaking assessments.
Staff Delivering on this course
The Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment is one of the three oldest of its kind in the UK, with a heritage that extends back to the 19th Century.
Whilst we are proud of our history, we have continually evolved our offering to the needs of our professional areas today, combining innovative thinking with new technologies and contemporary practice across all aspects of the design and construction of building, public space and cities. Tutors involved with this short course have teaching and research interests in: Architecture Product Design, Design and Decision Making Processes for multidisciplinary teams, Collaboration Management and Conflicts Analysis: Construction and O&G Applications for Teams’ Efficiency, Building Information Modelling and pre-BIM stages.
Dr Salman is experienced Research Coordinator with a demonstrated history of working in the higher education industry. She is a skilled professional in further education delivering excellence in Architectural Technology, Computer-Aided Design (CAD), BIM, Visual Thinking, Design Thinking, and Research Methodology (Design process-oriented protocol/ think aloud & Linkography).
Assessment
The module will be assessed by participation within online discussion forums, online group work, and one main piece of individual written coursework.

Applicants are encouraged to arrange a pre-entry visit to discuss any concerns and to view the facilities.

Within the UK, both the RIBA and the RICS have made significant efforts to lead discussion and debate regarding how visualisation and BIM will revolutionise the undertaking of architectural projects in the coming years.
This course will represent a valuable addition to the useful and applicable skills and knowledge of graduates.
