Explore world energy markets and the evolution of, and challenges facing, the carbon economy. Consider the role the economics of energy transition plays in the decision making within the energy industry. Examine the direction and pace of the clean energy transition and sustainability.

We will explore the evolution of the carbon economy and energy markets and in doing so consider labour markets in the energy sector and basic macro and micro economic concepts, including the impact of digitalisation, decentralisation and automation on demand side driven net-zero transition. We will also consider cost analysis of renewable energy investments, cost comparison of alternative energy sources and development of alternative business models considering energy storage.

Topics

On completion of this course, participants are expected to be able to:

Critically assess the economic concepts and principles of market demand and supply underlining operations of the global energy markets.
Critically reflect on and apply the principles of transition energy economics to decision making related to new energy options.
Evaluate the impact of greenhouse gas emissions and climate change as impetus for the transition away from burning fossil fuels.
Analyse how different energy sources compare in terms of cost and value.
Critically apply economic modelling approaches to risk and uncertainty in renewable energy context with focus on broader impact of transition risk.

Learning methods

This module is delivered through online learning, via the University's Virtual Learning Environment, Moodle. A two hour session is planned each week to allow engagement between the teaching team and the course participants to accommodate learner questions and any concerns. The full two hour session may not be required each week.

In the 13 week course duration, there is 9 weeks delivery, with assessment submission 4 weeks later.

Independent Study

Materials and exercises are available online, allowing participants to study flexibly and independently at any time or in any place around existing work and life commitments.

On this course you will also have access to further reading resources and online tutor support.

Assessment

This course is assessed through a report.

If you are domiciled in Scotland, you may be eligible for a fee-waiver place, meaning you can study for free.
