Advanced Concepts for Leading in Community Nursing

Short Course & Professional Development
The module topics address the learning outcomes:
- Critique the theories, principles, and concepts which underpin improving the health and well-being of populations.
- Evaluate the theoretical concepts of evidence-based, person-centred assessment and care whilst being an accountable, autonomous professional.
- Analyse a range of leadership theory, strategies and approaches to address healthcare needs to deliver high quality evidence-based care.
- Critique the complexities and influences associated with providing and leading improvements in safety and quality care.
- Appraise the underpinning principles and concepts of leading, supporting and managing teams and caseloads.
You will critique the theories, principles, and concepts which underpin improving the health and well-being of populations throughout this 12 week module.
We shall use a virtual community approach to evaluate the theoretical concepts of evidence-based, person-centred assessment and care whilst being an accountable, autonomous professional in the community. Through asynchronous discussion, we shall analyse a range of leadership theory, strategies and approaches to address healthcare needs to deliver high quality evidence-based care. You will consider and critique the complexities and influences associated with providing and leading improvements in safety and quality care within the area that you practice and appraise the underpinning principles and concepts of leading, supporting and managing teams and caseloads.
Learning Methods
This module is delivered online via our Virtual Learning Environment Moodle.
This module will run over 12 weeks and there is an activity at the end of each topic to reflect the learning undertaken.
The activity will consist of a flipped classroom approach where an article will be read, or a video reviewed and then a session facilitated by one of the module team members to discuss and debate the subject.
There will be a virtual community where students will have the opportunity to learn in a safe environment.
Our volunteer patients have helped to co-create these scenarios along with our partners in practice so that they reflect an authentic community nursing experience.
There will be links to further reading throughout each topic that will explore research, policy and guidance relevant to community nursing.
Independent Study
It is recommended that student undertake 250 hours on non-contact hours and 50 hours contact.
Assessment
Assessment is a written assignment. This will take the form of a 3,000 word case study addressing the five learning outcomes of the module, demonstrating what has been learnt throughout the module.
Staff Delivering on This Course
There are two members of academic staff delivering this module. They both have extensive community nursing experience and hold the SPQ in District Nursing. Both have extensive healthcare teaching experience, and both lead different educational routes within the RGU School of Nursing, Midwifery and Paramedic Practice portfolio.
Career Prospects

Standard Entry Requirements
This course is suitable for those working in health and social care, including national health services, care organisations, private health organisations, care homes, local authorities, government health roles, occupational health, and non-governmental and voluntary organisations with a care focus in the UK and internationally.
The minimum entry requirement for this course will normally be an honours degree at 2.2 or its equivalent with appropriate health-related work experience.
For this course, we also invite applications from those who have the required honours degree in subject areas not related to health if you are working in the care sector.
Applicants who do not meet the standard entry qualifications, but do have a professional qualification, combined with a minimum of two years of relevant work experience may be considered, and would be invited to an asynchronous online, interview process.
English Language Requirements
Applicants must satisfy the University's general admission requirements to courses as contained in Academic Academic Regulation A2: Admission and Enrolment, including proficiency to a minimum standard in the English language.
