Significance of Children, City, and participatory design
Research Opportunities
Summary
Children can play strongly to express their needs and conditions to prosper in their environment. Design of cities, from the micro-design decision to mega-design intervention, youth and children are not a party to the decision making. Taking the action-oriented research, ‘children-centred urbanism (CCU)’ and using the participatory tool: ‘stitching urban vision (SUV)’ – it is well understood that a place and social-responsive design could be achieved when including children and youth in the participatory process.
The research stems from a long exploration with children in many continents where school children were part of the school playground design. Moreover, experimental urban design shows that displaced children in refugee camps and slums could be valuable partners for participatory community design.
