NGOs in Global Governance: Redefining Accountability and Influence in International Law
Research Opportunities
Summary
NGOs are pivotal players in areas like climate advocacy, human rights, and humanitarian aid, but their role in global governance remains contested. This research will explore how NGOs navigate their dual roles as influencers in international law and as accountable entities to both their constituents and the global community.
This project aims to contribute novel insights into the accountability mechanisms that govern NGOs’ activities in international policy spaces by examining case studies involving recent global crises—such as the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and regional unrest. Additionally, the study will propose a framework that international bodies can adopt to balance NGOs' influence with accountability. Methods include doctrinal qualitative analysis of policy documents, stakeholder interviews (primary or secondary data sourced), and a review of digital platforms enabling NGO participation.
