Watch the final of the RGU Regional Startup Accelerator as businesses go head-to-head to win cash prizes voted for by a panel of judges and a live audience.

About the Event

Join us live on Thursday 12 May 2022 18:00 – 20:00 as we broadcast the final of this year’s Regional Startup Accelerator from the Sandman Signature Hotel. Watch teams pitch, vote for your favourite, and celebrate the entrepreneurs that have taken part in this year’s programme.

Voting

During the event, you get the opportunity to vote for your favourite teams to win cash prizes. Once you’ve heard from all teams, the voting will open and you have two categories you can vote for – which pitching finalist was your favourite and which semi finalist video advertisement was your favourite.

Prizes

The startup teams will have the opportunity to win several prizes during the event with a prize pot of £80,000 available including:

  • Innovation Impact Award – for a team that demonstrates a unique concept, with commercial viability and the potential to scale for global impact
  • Climate Impact Award – for a team which has an idea that can have a significant positive impact on the environment and demonstrates a commitment to net zero
  • Regional Impact Award – for a team which has presented a venture with the ability to create an impact on the people and communities of the region
  • Audience Choice Award – for a team which has secured the highest number of votes from the audience for their live pitch
  • Showcase Video Awards – for the first place, second place and third place teams who submitted the best video advertisements
  • Showcase Experience Awards – for the first place and second place teams who curated the most engaging showcase experience
  • Recognition Award – for the team recognised by the programme facilitators for their outstanding commitment and engagement to the accelerator

Judges

The winners of the prizes shall be decided by an esteemed panel of industry judges which include:

Stephen Coleman OBE

Co-Founder and CEO of CodeBase

Stephen is a graduate of BA (Hons) Computer Arts from Abertay University with a background in the digital tech ecosystem. Stephen co-founder CodeBase in 2014 to provide support to growing tech businesses and now has supported over 500 businesses and tenants and delivers mentorship in 26 cities including through ONE CodeBase in Aberdeen. Stephen was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2019 for services to technology entrepreneurship.

Donella Beaton

Vice Principal for Economic Development at Robert Gordon University

Donella originally undertook a BSc in Biology and trained as a teacher before starting an enterprise-focussed career, often working at the intersection between higher education and business. She joined RGU in late 2012 to support the University to develop its commercial portfolio and business engagement after being CEO of a successful university spin-in company. Now, as RGU Vice Principal Economic Development, Donella champions the University’s work to stimulate economic development in the region, nationally and internationally, and in supporting organisations and businesses to be more successful. 

Jen Scott

Senior Digital Development Manager at Opportunity North East

Jen has a background in data and artificial intelligent with twenty years’ experience in the tech sector and a PhD in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Aberdeen. In her role at ONE, Jen develops and implements programmes to support the growth of tech companies in the North East and accelerate the region’s digital transformation.

Luca Corradi

Innovation Network Director at the Net Zero Technology Centre

Luca has led a career in transformational projects in the Energy industry and delivered programmes focused on innovation and organisational change across multiple countries. At the Net Zero Technology Centre, Luca focuses on horizon scanning to identify emerging technology and trends to work with stakeholders to identify solutions and strategies for a sustainable future.

Attending the Event

If you are attending the event at the Sandman Signature Hotel, the following information may be useful.

  • Parking – There is no parking available at the hotel, however you can park at the Bon Accord Shopping Centre car parks and have your token validated at the hotel for a discounted price
  • Dress Code – There is no formal dress code for the event – most guests will be in business casual.
  • Covid-19 Protocols – We encourage all guests to take a rapid lateral flow test before attending the event. Face coverings will be optional, and guests will be able to select either a green lanyard to indicate their comfort to speak to others without a mask or an orange lanyard if guests would prefer others to keep their distance and wear a face covering. If anyone has symptoms of Covid-19 prior to the event, we ask that they do not attend and watch online instead.
  • Catering – Food and drinks will be provided at the event from 5:30pm – 6:00pm with a mix of dietary requirements accommodated. The bar will be available for soft and alcoholic drinks for which guests will have to pay for these themselves.
  • Accessibility – If any guests have accessibility requirements, please alert the event team to this by contacting innovation@rgu.ac.uk

About the Regional Startup Accelerator

This event is the final of the RGU Regional Startup Accelerator Cohort 4 which is delivered by the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Group and funded by the Scottish Government and Scottish Funding Council through the North East Economic Recovery and Skills Fund (NEERSF).

Over 190 teams applied to the programme with innovative concepts with a cohort of 36 accepted to undergo a five-month period of training, mentorship and support including access to £5,000 funding each. Previous participants have gone on to raise over £1.6 million in investment, hire staff, win national awards and more.
