Engineering

The MSc Engineering Programme allows you to apply for any module* in our wide selection of Online Learning degrees, offered by the School of Computing, Engineering and Technology. Some modules may have prerequisites over and above the standard qualifications for entry.

Each module can be completed individually as a personal development opportunity. Three awards are available:

• Master of Science Engineering (8 modules plus a project)
• Postgraduate Diploma Engineering (8 modules)
• Postgraduate Certificate Engineering (4 modules)

This programme has been designed to encourage a variety of applicants who wish to further their career through CPD, gain a wider appreciation of other disciplines or gain accreditation to a professional body as part of a further learning plan.

Applicants may be:

• A qualified Engineer who is undecided on which Engineering MSc discipline to choose, may undertake a number of modules to inform their choice while still working towards an MSc
• A qualified Engineer who would like to take a number of modules from different Engineering MSc courses
• An Engineer looking to undertake CPD with one module
• Companies seeking a tailored set of modules to suit the training needs of their employees

Learning Methods

The MSc Engineering Programme allows you to apply for any module* from our wide  selection of Online Distance Learning engineering courses. Some modules may have prerequisites over and above the standard qualifications for entry.

You will engage with tutors and your peers using our virtual learning environment  CampusMoodle, allowing you to discuss and share learning. All your learning material is available online 24/7 providing flexibility and ease of access.

Students working towards the MSc will typically take up to 3 modules per year and each module comprises up to 60 hours of online delivery over 12 weeks of teaching. The assessment component of the module is submitted within or at the end of these 12 weeks.

Activity Summary

• Lectures - 2.5 hours per week – combination of online participation and private study over a 12 week period
• Project Supervision - 15 hours per week
• Independent study - 150 hours of online participation and private study per 15 credit module over a 12 week period

How long is an MSc Engineering course?

The duration of the MSc Engineering course varies from 15 weeks to 6 years, in which the opportunity to receive the necessary skills are obtained.

Independent Study

A significant portion of this course is underpinned by independent learning, and you will be expected to be responsible for managing your coursework, reading and other learning activities appropriately. Significant additional private study is expected during each module.

Assessment

The assessment component of each module is submitted within or at the end of each  12 weeks block of teaching.

Each module will be assessed by a closed book examination or written assignment or a combination of both. The number of assessments students will undertake over a year will depend on the number of modules taken.

Feedback

We aim to provide you with feedback within 20 working days of submission of coursework.

Staff Delivering on This Course

We’ve been delivering industry-relevant courses for the energy industry for many years, and our teaching staff members bring a wealth of expertise and experience to the curriculum. They are research-active and work on live industry projects. This includes input to patented technology and the design of products and systems to positively impact society and improve the lives of communities in developing countries. 

Job Prospects

The vast majority of graduates are in employment in the Energy Sector. Evidence shows that there is a healthy demand for Engineers who demonstrate their development through further study. This is a career-enhancing course and modules will provide you with updated capabilities suited to changing and emerging professional engineering roles. You will develop your capacity as a reflective Engineer, building and applying practical knowledge and skills, as you further your understanding of research and the evidence based approaches.

What is needed for MSc Engineering?

• Applicants normally hold a 2:2 undergraduate honours degree or its equivalent in Engineering or a relevant discipline such as Geology, Physics, Chemistry or Mathematics.
• Applicants with a lower degree classification and / or relevant work experience will be considered on a case by case basis.

English Language Requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English should have an IELTS of 6.5 overall, with no component lower than 5.5, or an equivalent.

International students who do not meet our direct entry requirements for this course can gain additional entry points through our International College at Robert Gordon University.

Tuition fees for this MSc Engineering degree are as follows:

For Academic Year 2025/2026

• £1,330 per online learning module
• £3,530 per Individual Engineering Research Investigation (Project)

For Academic Year 2024/2025

• £1,210 per online learning module
• £3,210 per Individual Engineering Research Investigation (Project)

Additional Costs

• Offsite exam fees will be covered by the student.
