Project Planning and Control
This master level short course allows you to critically assess, within a problem-solving environment, the processes and strategies undertaken by project managers to define, plan control, and deliver functional projects
One of the main characteristics of project management is that it deals with unique and novel activities which are tailored towards specific end-items. These activities need to be identified, defined, and described in terms of resource requirements, time boundaries and cost allowances. They also need to be linked to each other and to other activities within the organisation. Project planning and control support the achievement of this. The processes enable people to understand what is needed to meet project goals and it reduces the uncertainty of the outcomes.

With your engagement and participation you will be able to demonstrate your ability to:
- Use different planning techniques, assess and evaluate the differing tasks time, cost and quality requirements to produce a project delivery plan within a goal oriented environment.
- Apply resources scheduling and allocation techniques to facilitate effective project control.
- Critically appraise key project evaluation monitoring and control techniques and their importance in bringing projects to successful completion.
- Critically review and apply the various IT led techniques, viewed as contemporary project management tools.
- Evaluate different quality systems and their role in minimising waste and giving value to the client.

Learning Methods
You will study within a global group of professionals employed within the various construction industries. There are weekly opportunities to enter into online discussion forums to discuss topics and exchange views and experiences, thereby providing a broader worldly interpretation and application of the knowledge provided. A series of study guides will lead you. All learning material, activities, and reading resources are available online via the module.
You will learn via our online virtual learning environment, CampusMoodle which provides you with lectures and course materials and allows you to study from any location.
As well as your Tutor, you will also have your own dedicated e-advisor who will assist you in accessing and engaging with the online material.
Independent Study
All learning material is provided and students will be expected to work through this material independently before participating in discussion with fellow students, completing activities and undertaking assessments.
Staff Delivering on this course
The Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment is one of the three oldest of its kind in the UK, with a heritage that extends back to the 19th Century.
Whilst we are proud of our history, we have continually evolved our offering to the needs of our professional areas today, combining innovative thinking with new technologies and contemporary practice across all aspects of the design and construction of building, public space and cities. Tutors involved with this short course have teaching and research interests in: project management competencies in superior and average performers, organisations, performance, and competence (particularly the transactional / transformational debate).
Dr Bjeirmi main teaching areas are: Project Management (including project administration, planning & control, leadership and organisational development), Management for the built environment, Standard Forms of Construction Contracts and Construction Procurement.
Assessment
The module will be assessed by participation within online discussion forums, online group work, and one main piece of individual written coursework.
Academic Support
The Inclusion Centre advises and supports students who disclose a sensory or mobility impairment, chronic medical condition, mental health issue, dyslexia and other specific learning differences. Applicants are encouraged to arrange a pre-entry visit to discuss any concerns and to view the facilities.

All online learning students, benefit from using our collaborative virtual learning environment, CampusMoodle. You will be provided with 24/7 online access to your learning material and resources, along with the ability to interact with your class members and tutors for discussion and support.
Study Skills Support
The Study Support Team provides training and support to all students in:
- Academic writing
- Study skills (note taking, exam techniques, time management, presentation)
- Maths and statistics
- English language
- Information technology support
Library Support
The Library offers support for your course, including the books, eBooks, and journals you will need. We also offer online reading lists for many modules, workshops and drop-ins on searching skills and referencing, and much more.
As a fully accredited short course this module will enhance any project manager’s résumé and can lead onto higher qualifications.
A good honours degree and/or relevant industry experience.
