An Introduction to Law and Ethics for Decision Making
This module sets out to enable students to demonstrate a critical understanding of law and ethics in the context of health and social care.
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of legal systems in the context of health and social care.
- Critically analyse health practice in the context of legal frameworks.
- Synthesise philosophical considerations in relation to law in health. Make informed judgements on moral, ethical, and legal conundrums in relation to health and social care.
- Be able to critique the reasoning used in legal judgements.

Learning Methods
This module is delivered online via our Virtual Learning Environment Moodle.
The module runs over one semester there are interactive topic learning guides to direct students learning. These lead into online asynchronous discussion / activity forums to facilitate students sharing their learning and help build a learning community.
Recorded lectures support learning further.
Weblinks to applicable videos further support topic learning and different preferred ways of learning.
There are weekly live/ recorded Webinars on a Wednesday morning using Microsoft Teams
Independent Study
It is recommended that student undertake 8 hours of private study per week.
Assessment
Students are formally assessed through written coursework, using a case study to critically discuss and apply their knowledge.
Staff Delivering on This Course
Staff delivering this module work in School of Law and Social Sciences and the School of Health. Those teaching staff from the School of Health are registered practitioners who have also studied Health Law. They support the discussions on the application of theory to real life practice.
Academic Support
The Inclusion Centre advises and supports students who disclose a sensory or mobility impairment, chronic medical condition, mental health issue, dyslexia and other specific learning differences. Applicants are encouraged to arrange a pre-entry visit to discuss any concerns and to view the facilities.

Library Support
The Library offers support for your course, including the books, eBooks, and journals you will need. We also offer online reading lists for many modules, workshops and drop-ins on searching skills and referencing, and much more.

Credit from this module may contribute to the MSc Healthcare Leadership.
Standard Entry Requirements
This course is suitable for those working in health and social care, including national health services, care organisations, private health organisations, care homes, local authorities, government health roles, occupational health, and non-governmental and voluntary organisations with a care focus in the UK and internationally.
The minimum entry requirement for this module will normally be achievement of a Health or Social Care undergraduate degree at level 9, with appropriate health-related work experience.
We also invite applications from those who have the required degree in subject areas not related to health if you are working in the care sector. /p>
Applicants who do not meet the standard entry qualifications, but do have a professional qualification, combined with a minimum of two years of relevant work experience may be considered, and would be invited to an asynchronous online, interview process.
English Language Requirements
Applicants must satisfy the University's general admission requirements to courses as contained in Academic Academic Regulation A2: Admission and Enrolment, including proficiency to a minimum standard in the English language.
