This one-day introductory workshop invites you to spend your time learning the ancient craft of throwing; a method of forming pottery using a potter’s wheel. This workshop is available on two different days in August.
Aimed at beginners and those with an interest in expanding their clay skills, participants will be taught the traditional art of throwing.
The art of pottery is simply taking clay that has come from the ground and shaping it using a turning wheel.
This one-day workshop will demonstrate how to make one small pot and one large pot using the potter’s wheel.
Participants are invited to experiment and are provided with the opportunity to practice throwing pottery for themselves using the potter’s wheel.
Throughout the day, you will start to learn the steps involved in the process of throwing and once pots begin to dry, you may wish to start exploring more functional forms by adding handles, spouts, and possibly even begin to introduce lids to your pottery.
Using the skills learnt, participants can make their own small family of objects. This can involve up to three individual pieces. Each piece can be bisque fired using the kiln located in our ceramic’s studio.
Following the weekend, a transparent glaze will be applied to all clay bisque-ware on behalf of participants.
Maker’s pots can be collected at a later date.

Learning Methods
This course will be delivered on campus over Saturday or Sunday from 10:00 - 16:00. The same workshop will run on both days for a different group of participants, giving you the choice of day to take part.
Activity Summary
- Minimum of 5 students, maximum of 5 in the group
- 5 hours of teaching in total over 1 day. 10:00 - 16:00 with a 1 hour lunch break from 12:30 - 13:30.

Staff Delivering on this Course
Matthew Wilcock
Winner of the first BBC ‘The Great Pottery Throw Down’ competition, Matthew Wilcock is known internationally and has been involved in ceramics from a young age.
Since graduating with a degree in ceramics, Wilcock has taught in a wide range of schools, colleges, and universities and currently teaches at Gray’s School of Art.
In his own practice, the ceramicist focuses on functional, thrown pots made for everyday use.

Required Age
All students are required to be at least 16 years of age on the commencement of the course.

Course fee: £120 per person for the 1 day course.

Additional Costs
Essential core materials are provided.
Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided, however participants should bring their own lunch as most catering outlets on campus are closed during the weekend.
