Risk and Safety Management
Within Project Management risk identification, analyses, evaluation and management is all about recognising risk as far as possible and then determining both how this risk may affect the project, the project team, the environment and communities.
Dealing with risk within project environments can be facilitated through the adoption of processes and procedures but there needs to be an awareness of the environments/circumstances in which a specific process or procedure is appropriate. While they are useful in structuring risk management effectively (resulting in a degree of uncertainty reduction) they should not be used mechanistically; there remains a qualitative component to the management of risk that requires an understanding of issues that are not amenable to purely quantitative processes and procedures.
Within this short course we will explore the foundations of the risk management process, complex projects, supply chain vulnerability and contingency planning and disaster management, as well as health, safety and well-being within projects and construction industry.
To develop a professional working understanding of the principles and applications of risk and safety management as they apply in project management.
Through your engagement and participation you will be able to demonstrate your ability to:
- Debate risk in the context of project management.
- Identify, analyse and critically assess risk in specific case-study situations.
- Develop and justify risk-driven management decisions.
- Implement and monitoring risk management techniques in specific situations.
- Integrate and manage Health, Safety and Environmental, as well as Policy, issues and in projects with awareness of legislative and statutory requirements.

Learning Methods
You will study within a global group of professionals employed within the various construction industries. There are weekly opportunities to enter into online discussion forums to discuss topics and exchange views and experiences, thereby providing a broader worldly interpretation and application of the knowledge provided. A series of study guides will lead you. All learning material, activities, and reading resources are available online via the module.
You will learn via our online virtual learning environment, CampusMoodle which provides you with lectures and course materials and allows you to study from any location.
As well as your Tutor, you will also have your own dedicated e-advisor who will assist you in accessing and engaging with the online material.
Independent Study
All learning material is provided and students will be expected to work through this material independently before participating in discussion with fellow students.
Staff Delivering on this course
Our School is one of the three oldest of its kind in the UK, with a heritage that extends back to the 19th Century. We combine innovative thinking with new technologies and contemporary practice across all aspects of design and construction. Tutors have interests in: Architecture Product Design, Design and Decision-Making Processes for multidisciplinary teams, Collaboration Management and Conflicts Analysis: Construction and O&G Applications for Teams’ Efficiency, Building Information Modelling and pre-BIM stages.
Experienced in new build and retrofit projects with previous research focussing on the challenges for the construction sector and its clients, supply chain, local authority and end-users.
Assessment
The module will be assessed by participation within online discussion forums, online group work, and one main piece of individual written coursework.
Academic Support
The Inclusion Centre advises and supports students who disclose a sensory or mobility impairment, chronic medical condition, mental health issue, dyslexia and other specific learning differences. Applicants are encouraged to arrange a pre-entry visit to discuss any concerns and to view the facilities.

All online learning students, benefit from using our collaborative virtual learning environment, CampusMoodle. You will be provided with 24/7 online access to your learning material and resources, along with the ability to interact with your class members and tutors for discussion and support.

The Study Support Team provides training and support to all students in:

Library Support
The Library offers support for your course, including the books, eBooks, and journals you will need. We also offer online reading lists for many modules, workshops and drop-ins on searching skills and referencing, and much more.
