Creative Entrepreneurship SCQF Level 11 | 15 credits
This short course will provide you with the entrepreneurial tools required to establish and lead creative businesses and organisations to achieve long-term sustainability, built on a foundation of value-driven creative production, current entrepreneurial thinking and a critical understanding of how to apply this in the broader creative industries context.

The course is part of a portfolio of courses and activities to support innovation and entrepreneurship in the region, and support talent retention. As a critical driver to economic development and culture, there is a requirement for creative entrepreneurs who demonstrate sectoral knowledge and ingenuity, and the ability to think differently in an ever-changing world.

There will be 6 taught sessions with an exhibition built into the curriculum, which will take place at the RGU ONE Tech Hub space and the Look Again Project Space.

 Over 6 full-day workshop sessions you will cover:

  • Introduction to an entrepreneurial toolkit including the business model canvas, value proposition canvas, customer persona and customer journey mapping
  • "Story" and its applications to business including pitching, presenting, building brand and curation
  • Case studies and tools to create practical models for developing your own business/organisation, with the aim of establishing a sustainable creative business
  • The "entrepreneurial mindset" including values, purpose, ambition and philosophical theories
  • The wider context of the creative industries from their inception, as a backdrop to 21st century creative business, and the opportunities presented
  • Coaching in the presentation of your business as part of a showcase

All teaching will take place in central Aberdeen at the RGU ONE Tech Hub space and the Look Again Project Space.

Approximately 20 students in each group

6 x 1-day (6 hour) workshops, with each day comprised of a variety of elements:

  • Short lecture-style delivery
  • Group working
  • Practical application of knowledge
  • Production of bespoke material for business development
  • Production of final showcase
  • Industry guest talks  
INDEPENDENT STUDY

Independent study will take place between weekly sessions with specific practical tasks set and logged in reflective portfolio for final submission.

Staff Delivering on this Course

You will be taught by staff from the Entrepreneurship and Innovation team, who are experienced in delivering the highly successful RGU Startup, and will introduce and help you apply a range of business development tools. You will also be taught by members of Look Again Aberdeen, part of Gray’s School of Art, who will provide you with coaching through the process of producing and curating the final showcase. 

Assessment

Typically students are assessed through producing Project Outputs and a Portfolio during the course.

 

Academic Support

The Disability & Dyslexia Centre advises and supports students who disclose a sensory or mobility impairment, chronic medical condition, mental health issue, dyslexia and other specific learning differences. The Study Support Team provides training and support to all students in:

  • Academic writing
  • Study skills (note taking, exam techniques, time management, presentation)
  • Maths and statistics

Study Skills Support

 

The course will provide you with the knowledge and skills required to start up and/or develop a sustainable and successful business, furthering your career prospects through the production and sale of products or services. You will also gain a wealth of collaborative opportunities and networks that you can further build upon on successful competition of the course.

There is also the opportunity to continue building a portfolio of similar short courses into a postgraduate qualification. 
 

This course is ideal for students who possess an undergraduate honours degree in any discipline or who have relevant work experience.

All international students, for whom English is not their first language, should have either IELTS 6.5 or its equivalent in TOEFL. You should note that short course modules are not eligible for Tier 4 sponsorship.

  • Students who qualify for SFC funding the course fees will be met in full
  • Non-qualifying applicants the course fee is £1,250
