Creative Entrepreneurship
Understand the tools available to you to grow a sustainable creative business.
The course is part of a portfolio of courses and activities to support innovation and entrepreneurship in Scotland, and support talent retention. As a critical driver to economic development and culture, there is a requirement for creative entrepreneurs who demonstrate sectoral knowledge and ingenuity, and the ability to think differently in an ever-changing world.
Six topics will cover:
- Entrepreneurial Mindset: Purpose, Values, Goals and Decision Making
- Entrepreneurial Toolkit: business model canvas, value proposition canvas and other tools.
- Desirability: Understanding and communicating with Customers.
- Feasibility: the practicalities of running a business and balancing the activities and resources required as well as exploring how collaboration can support your business.
- Viability: Understanding your cost structures and income streams with an exploration of Pricing.
- Story: its many applications to business including pitching, presenting, building brand and curation
All set in the wider context of 21st century creative industries and including case studies, guest speakers and the potential to showcase your work.

The course will be delivered online using the University’s virtual learning environment, CampusMoodle.
Independent Study
Independent study will take place between workshops with specific practical tasks set and logged in reflective portfolio for final submission.
Staff Delivering on this Course
You will be taught by staff from the Entrepreneurship and Innovation team, who are experienced in delivering the highly successful RGU Startup, and will introduce and help you apply a range of business development tools. You will also be taught by members of Look Again Aberdeen, part of Gray’s School of Art, who will provide you with coaching through the process of producing and curating the final showcase.
Assessment
Typically students are assessed through producing Project Outputs and a Portfolio during the course.
Academic Support
The Inclusion Centre advises and supports students who disclose a sensory or mobility impairment, chronic medical condition, mental health issue, dyslexia and other specific learning differences. Applicants are encouraged to arrange a pre-entry visit to discuss any concerns and to view the facilities.
Online Learning & Support
All online learning students, benefit from using our collaborative virtual learning environment, CampusMoodle. You will be provided with 24/7 online access to your learning material and resources, along with the ability to interact with your class members and tutors for discussion and support.
Study Skills Support
The Study Support Team provides training and support to all students in:
- Academic writing
- Study skills (note taking, exam techniques, time management, presentation)
- Maths and statistics
- English language
- Information technology support
Library Support
The Library offers support for your course, including the books, eBooks, and journals you will need. We also offer online reading lists for many modules, workshops and drop-ins on searching skills and referencing, and much more.
The course will provide you with the knowledge and skills required to start up and/or develop a sustainable and successful business, furthering your career prospects through the production and sale of products or services. You will also gain a wealth of collaborative opportunities and networks that you can further build upon on successful competition of the course.
There is also the opportunity to continue building a portfolio of similar short courses into a postgraduate qualification.
To qualify for a place on the course you must be living in Scotland.
Academic Year 2023/2024
Fee-waiver places
Course participants must be domiciled in Scotland to be eligible for a fee-waiver place.
To be eligible for funding, you generally need to have 'settled status' in Scotland, meaning there are no restrictions on how long you can stay here. For example, this can be from birth or Right to Remain visa.
Eligibility is assessed on application and further evidence may be required.
All other applicants
Applicants who are not eligible for a fee-waiver place can pay to study the course - £350 entire course
Additional Costs
The following course-related costs are not included in the course fees:
- The cost of books that you may wish to purchase.
- Costs associated with your placement / study abroad
- Accommodation and living costs
- Printing
