How Efficient are Facemasks for Preventing Spread of Pathogens
Research Opportunities
Summary
The rationale has been the presumption facemasks will reduce pathogen transmission. For the same reason, prior to the pandemic, many healthcare activities historically involve use of facemasks. Critically, whether facemasks reduce the transmission of viruses and bacteria has been widely debated and is known to be influenced by many aspects. Little research has been conducted in the area and the aim will be to investigate factors impacting on the efficiency of facemasks to reduce pathogen transmission. Objectives to be considered include mask type/construction and composition/material, as well as factors around use such as fit and mode/length of wear, and impact of reuse. Findings will assist policymaker with an evidence base around the potential positive impact of wearing facemasks.
