Law and Management

Year 1

In Year 1 you will gain an understanding of the sources and nature of legal rules and institutions, as well as an overview of the managerial and economic systems relevant to Business. Transferable skills such as analytical and presentation skills will also be taught.

Year 2

This year develops concepts introduced in Year 1 and provides specialised knowledge of Private and Public Law subjects and areas of Management of particular relevance to businesses. You will have the option to choose a specific area of Management for focused study.

Year 3

You will build on the fundamental Legal and Management concepts learnt in Years 1 and 2 and continue to gain specialised knowledge. You have the opportunity to undertake a placement to gain practical experience and build on your employability skills. An optional legal route is available for you after successful completion of Year 3 if you would like to access the LLB.

Year 4

In your final year you can specialise further in either law, or management, or a combination of both. Relevant to career aspirations, the modules will develop your understanding of Law and Management and also help you to prepare a Dissertation on a specialist topic through independent study and research.  

The grade that you achieve in each module in your final year determines your Honours classification.

Learning Methods

On this course, you will study four modules each Term with each modules involving around three hours of class teaching per week.  Each module differs, but most have two hours of lectures delivered to the whole class, plus a further one hour tutorial taught to a small group of about 18 students.

Your course resources will be available on CampusMoodle, an innovative online teaching and learning environment which will enhance your learning experience and will keep you up-to-date with coursework and assignments on-the-go.

Activity Summary

• Lectures - 40 students per group, 6 hours per week
• Tutorial - 18 students per group, 3 hours per week
• Practical class or workshop - 30 hours per term
• Independent Study - 47 hours per week 

How long is a Law and Management course?

The BA (Hons) Law and Management course can be successfully completed in 4 years.

Independent Study

In Year 4, you will undertake a 12,000 word Dissertation which accounts for two modules.  The remaining six modules are optional thus you can tailor your degree to a chosen career pathway in either Law or Management.

Staff Delivering on This Course

All our academic staff are encouraged to work towards a Higher Education Academy Fellowship.  This is a professional recognition of an individuals practice, impact and leadership of teaching and learning.

The majority of teaching staff on this course are engaged in research activity of the same subject. In addition, many of our staff have professional Legal and Management experience meaning that the course is taught with a highly practical edge.

Staff on this course could also include guest lecturers, industry experts, librarians and Postgraduate Research students.

Assessment

Assessment methods will vary according to module choices.

Typically students are assessed each year:

Year 1

• 5 written exams, typically for 1.5 hours
• 5 written assignments, including essays
• 1 oral assessment
• 10 class tests

Year 2

• 6 written exams, typically for 1.5 hours
• 5 written assignments, including essays
• 5 class tests

Year 3

• 5 written exams
• 7 written assignments, including essays
• 1 oral assessment
• Open book quiz

Year 4

• 4 written exams
• 8 written assignments, including essays
• 1 dissertation

Feedback

We aim to provide you with feedback within 20 working days of hand-in for all written exams, coursework and practical exams.

Placements

In the summer between Years 3 and 4, you will have the opportunity to gain practical experience through a paid 12 week (on average) placement with a small, medium-sized or multinational organisation situated locally, nationally or internationally.

Past placements include Northlink Ferries, NHS Grampian, Aberdeen Community Safety Partnership, and Scottish Courts & Tribunal Service.

Placements are highly regarded by employers as preparation for employment and are an invaluable opportunity to gain practical experience, apply theoretical principles to real-life situations and establish links with potential employers.

Placements are arranged through the Placement Office. Where no external placement is secured students will undertake an internal University placement.

Study Abroad

In Year 3 of the course you will have the opportunity to spend a 12-week term abroad at one of our partner universities in Europe or at our partner university in the US. Previous students have studied in Italy, The Netherlands and Denmark.

Is Law and Management a good career choice?

Previous BA Law and Management graduates of Robert Gordon University have gone on to pursue the following careers:

Graduates secure positions working within oil and gas companies, banks and businesses, the civil service, corporate consultancy firms and the police. This course can also be a pathway to working in the legal profession as you can gain advanced entry into the Law LLB course at RGU after successful completion of Year 3.

Please note that the BA (Law and Management) (Hons) degree is not a qualifying degree for the purposes of becoming a solicitor in Scotland.

Standard Entry Requirements

• SQA Higher: BBBC
• GCE A Level: BCC
• Irish Leaving Certificate Higher: H2H3H3H3
• IB Diploma: 27

Minimum Entry Requirements

The minimum entry requirements for widening access applicants are:

• SQA Higher: BBC/BCCC

Applicants from Partner Colleges

A relevant HND from one of our partner colleges will be considered for entry into Year 3.

Applicants from Foundation Pathway Providers

Entry to year 1 or year 2 may be possible for students who have completed a Foundation Certificate or Foundation Undergraduate Pathway programme, from an approved UK provider, at 60% or above. For courses which require a specific subjects match, such as English or Maths, these would need to provided in addition to the Pathway Programme Certificate or result.

Advanced Entry

All other applicants who are interested in applying for advanced entry will be considered on an individual basis.

English Language Requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English should have an IELTS of 6.0 overall, with no component lower than 5.5, or an equivalent.
