Lorraine Tolmie

Series of old letters

Designer and printmaker Lorraine creates a story of the Highland Clearances, incorporating archival materials, photography and lived experience of the landscape in her work.

Lorraine Tolmie is an artist, designer and printmaker based on the northwest coast of the Scottish Highlands. The main focus of her printmaking practice is etching and monotype, often embellished with hand-tinting and precious-metal gilding. Interested in traditional processes and local histories, for her Northword creation Lorraine chose a story of the Highland Clearances, the crew of the Locheil.

Following an extensive research, Lorraine incorporated the archival materials into the final design, layered with 19th century crofting photographs, Lorraine’s own landscape photographs, and maritime charts. This combination of layers helped to embed the creation within the landscape and the local context.
