Andrea Chappell
Designer and kiltmaker Andrea Chappell creates a garment that reflects local history, traditions and culture in contemporary and creative way.
Designer and kiltmaker Andrea was drawn to the story of 'The Burning of the Clavie' and keen to use the story to bring regional culture and local craftspeople together, she planned a kilt for use by the Clavie King during the ceremony.
Andrea’s meticulous research and design of the Clavie King’s Kilt, inspired by the local story, local heritage and tradition, and contemporary industry and practices of Burghead and wider Moray, is a great example of context-sensitive creation of a story into a garment. From locally produced and spun wool to place-based design features and song lyrics about Burghead – the Kilt reflects the place and the people of the region, while offering contemporary and creative approach to embedding these features in a physical garment.
