Lee Forsyth - GA BSc IT: Management

Completing his Graduate Apprenticeship (GA) has allowed Lee Forsyth to score one of his career goals.

The 26-year-old completed a GA in IT Management for Business having started his first foray into computing a decade ago.

Lee said that the course helped build his confidence and he found that many of the lessons he learned during the programme were applicable to his job.

He was appointed the IT Manager at Aberdeen Football Club last year and feels like the GA was perfect for him.

Lee said: “I have always been interested in business and management, but also very interested in the technical side of IT.   The course is a mix of both business and technology which perfectly suited my needs, and that combined with the blended learning the course felt like it was designed for me.

“I am proud that I managed to obtain the degree whilst maintaining a healthy work-life balance, especially considering a good chunk of my time at the university was during the Covid-19 pandemic.”

Lee admits it was challenging and he had to defer his final two modules in third year to his final year.

He said the University were “hugely supportive” and welcomed him back the following year to complete the modules so he could complete his degree.

Lee also enjoyed the on-campus days at RGU because it was a good chance to meet his classmates who worked in IT in a raft of different industries.

He said that having completed the course he has secured the kind of job he always wanted at Aberdeen FC where he has been employed since 2015.

Lee said: “Part of my motivation for doing the degree was due to my aspirations to become an IT Manager.  I was promoted to IT Manager at Aberdeen Football Club in 2021 and I look forward to continuing my time there and using the knowledge and skills learned during my time at RGU to perform in the role well.

“There were naturally some modules that were more relevant to my role and career than others, however each module taught me something that I have managed to apply within the workplace.  As an example, the finance module put me in a great position when I took control of the IT budget for Aberdeen FC and allowed me to quickly get to grips with the process and successfully manage the budget in my first year as IT Manager.

“During my time at RGU I participated in marketing activities for the GA course which was a great experience and an opportunity to build my confidence.”
