Jaydn Walker – MArch Master of Architecture
Originally from Prestwick, South Ayrshire, Jaydn’s decision to pursue postgraduate studies at RGU was inspired by the strong sense of community within the Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment.
The 23-year-old is hoping to become a fully charted architect within the next four years and has taken a positive step in that direction by securing a job.
Jaydn said: “I’m moving to Edinburgh in the next few weeks to work as a Part 2 Architectural Assistant while working towards my Part 3 accreditation. The aim is to become a fully chartered architect by the time I’m 27 - which is still very young in this field, so I’m excited to get started and keep that momentum going.
“I think my time at RGU has really prepared me through all the networking opportunities and the variety of experiences we’ve had. It reflects how things work in practice - balancing different tasks, working across stages, and constantly adapting. While we take on big projects individually at university, in practice it’ll be more team-based, which I’m actually really looking forward to because I’ve always enjoyed group work and got a lot out of it during the course.”
Jaydn managed to successfully balance his studies with a part-time job as a product specialist for a major technology brand, and he feels this helped build up his soft and transferable skills.
He said that one of the biggest highlights of his time at RGU was serving as co-president of the 57-10 Architecture Society. Jaydn also feels that, beyond gaining a recognised academic qualification, the course has significantly boosted his confidence.
Jaydn added: “A major highlight for me has been being part of 57-10, from starting out as a member to becoming secretary and eventually co-president, it’s felt like a really special full-circle moment. I also served as a Student School Officer, which was incredibly rewarding and gave me the opportunity to support others.”
“But honestly, one of the most meaningful parts has been the friendships. I’ve made such good, lifelong friends who I absolutely love - I couldn’t imagine RGU life without them, and I know they’ll be a huge part of my professional life too.”
