What Our Students Say
Greta Raiderytė
BA (Hons) Applied Social Sciences student from Lithuania.
What attracted you to your course at RGU?
The application of both psychology and sociology in the course. The reason for me going into social sciences was because I was really fascinated by how societies form, exist, and develop. I also have an interest on how we are affected by living in social groups, and how the human brain works in general. I thought this course was perfect at examining these areas of my interest and both subjects would quite nicely complement one another.
Before coming to RGU, what were your expectations? And now that you are here, have your experiences differed?
Before coming to RGU I was quite nervous of not fitting in, or finding everything too much and too difficult to deal with, but now that I am here, I couldn't be happier. I've met some great people, all my classes are full of interesting topics and discussions, and the university is full of support outlets if I'm ever in need of any help.
What’s the best thing about being an RGU student?
The best thing about being a student at RGU is definitely the support that is available to you at arm’s length. Since day one it was made clear to us that if we ever need any type of support or we're experiencing some difficulties with our work or university life in general, help was available for us.
Describe your favourite memory of RGU so far?
My favourite memory of RGU would probably have to be my first ever lecture. It was a sociology lecture, and I remember walking in with all the other students into this vast room (a couple people commented how it's like being in a movie). And the whole lecture I couldn't believe that I have made it all the way from Lithuania and am now sitting in a lecture room in Aberdeen at RGU.
Tell us about your most challenging or rewarding project, assignment or module. What did you like or dislike about it and how has it helped you?
My most challenging module would perhaps have to be psychology. And that's simply because it's novel to me as I've never studied the subject before, and all the terms are fairly new and I was unfamiliar with them. However, the professors are great at discussing these new topics and everything is explained in a way that's easily understandable. And also, the reading lists help.
What is your favourite way to spend your time when you are not studying?
I have many hobbies that I try to fit into my busy university schedule. I enjoy crocheting, reading books, writing, watching movies and TV shows, and just going on nature walks.
What would you say to someone considering studying at RGU? Any advice you would share?
I would definitely recommend applying to RGU and study here, I think any choice they make will be right for them, but from a short personal experience - I definitely recommend studying here. When it comes to advice, I would just say take the application process easy, I know people (myself including) get very stressed out and anxious during it but looking back, I hope I could've enjoyed entering a new phase of my life a bit more. Whatever happens, everyone will find their place in the world.
What do you enjoy most about living in Aberdeen (city, food, people, entertainment, travel, etc.)?
I fell in love with Aberdeen because of its people. Everybody is incredibly nice and welcoming, ready to start a conversation with you at any moment. I also really love the nature here, there's many parks in the city but also the university campus is beautiful, especially in autumn.
