Policies, Procedures & Guidance

Expectant and Nursing Mothers

Everyone is exposed to hazards and risks when working or at study. These risks are mitigated so far as is reasonably practicable for the majority of the population. There are some situations when the consequence/severity of a hazard to a person may be different from everyone else. One prominent example of this is for new and expectant mothers.

As such, to ensure they are safe at their work or study a specific risk assessment should be undertaken upon RGU being notified.

Staff and students expecting or nursing children are advised to engage in the risk assessment process as early as possible, to enable potential risks and control measures to be evaluated.

The Human Resources Department leads the risk assessment process for employed expectant/nursing mothers.

Please refer to the university Family Friendly Policies/Procedures for further information.

Tutors lead the process for student expectant/nursing mothers, supported by the local Health and Safety Co-ordinator as necessary.

The Expectant and Nursing Mothers Risk Assessment Template should be completed and recorded. Advice and support can be sought from the OHES Department in respect of any special risks.
