students working on an engineering project

Engineering Course Projects

Project-based learning is an important part of our Engineering courses. From your first year, you will have opportunities to apply engineering theory through practical design, build and analysis activities.

As you progress, projects become increasingly challenging and open-ended, allowing you to develop technical knowledge alongside teamwork, communication, creativity, project management and problem-solving skills.

Year 1: Create, Design and Build

Your first year introduces you to engineering through practical design-and-build activities. You will work on engineering challenges that encourage you to turn ideas into practical solutions, applying fundamental engineering principles while developing skills in design, creativity, teamwork and communication.

The two 30-credit modules Create and Build and Design and Innovate provide a strong project and design focus throughout the year.

Year 2: Robot Wars

In Year 2, you will take on the Robot Wars challenge. This engaging project gives you an opportunity to bring together knowledge and skills from different areas of engineering to design, develop and test a robotic system.

Working through a practical engineering challenge allows you to develop your design, problem-solving and teamwork skills while experiencing the process of taking an engineering concept towards a working solution. Robot Wars is a core part of Year 2 across the Mechanical Engineering routes.

Year 3: Engineering Group Design Project

In Year 3, you will undertake an Engineering Group Design Project, working collaboratively to address a more complex engineering challenge.

Group projects are designed to reflect professional engineering practice, giving you experience of working as part of a team while developing your technical, communication, leadership and project-management skills. Projects may involve design, analysis or manufacturing challenges and typically require technical analysis, documentation and presentation of your engineering solution.

Year 4: Capstone Project

In Year 4, you will undertake a substantial individual Capstone Project, giving you the opportunity to investigate an engineering topic in depth.

The project allows you to take greater responsibility for your own work and apply the knowledge and skills developed throughout the course to a complex engineering problem. Depending on the project, your work may involve design, modelling, computational analysis or experimental investigation, developing your independent thinking, technical judgement and project-management skills. The Capstone Project carries 60 credits.

Year 5: MEng Group Project

Students following the MEng route complete a substantial MEng Group Project in Year 5. This 60-credit Master's-level project provides an opportunity to bring together advanced technical knowledge, engineering analysis and professional skills to address a complex engineering challenge as part of a team.

The project develops the higher-level problem-solving, collaboration and professional skills required for advanced engineering practice and provides a culmination of the project-based learning experienced throughout the course.

Developing as an Engineer

The projects become progressively more open-ended as you move through the course, giving you increasing responsibility for defining problems, evaluating alternatives and developing engineering solutions. The course documentation specifically identifies this increasing independence and complexity as an important part of the learning experience.

Along the way, you will develop skills valued in professional engineering, including teamwork, communication, leadership, design, analysis, project management and the ability to apply engineering knowledge to practical problems.
