Postgraduate Tuition Fee and Living Cost Loans - Scotland

Eligible postgraduate students can apply to Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS) for loans to cover tuition fees and living costs.

The maximum amounts available are:

  • £5,500 towards tuition fees
  • £4,500 towards living costs

Further details, including details about loan repayments:

  • the amount of tuition fee loan available does not depend on your household income.  
  • tuition fee loans are paid directly to the University.  
  • if your course lasts longer than one academic year your tuition fee loan will be split equally across each year of study. 

If your tuition fee amount is more than the maximum loan available to you, you are responsible for making payment of the outstanding amount to the University. 


The maximum amount available is £4,500.

The living cost loan is split equally across each year of your course eg. 

  • 1 year course - £4,500
  • 2 year course - £2,250 per year

How to Apply

Application should be made directly to SAAS.

*The closing date for applications for 2021/22 is 31 March 2022. You should apply before 30 June for funding to be ready for the start of a course with a start date in September. You can still apply even after your course has started
