Meet our Sports Scholars

Peter Young

Peter Young

Physiotherapy student and Powerlifter.

What is your sport and position?

Powerlifting - full power. This includes squat, bench and deadlift.

What made you pick your sport?

I naturally enjoyed the S&C side of rugby more than the rugby so I decided to specialise in that side of it four years ago.

If you didn’t do your sport, what would you do and why?

There are two sports I would be interested in trying. The first is sprinting as I think I would enjoy the short distance, power events. I am also very technically driven which would suit sprinting. The second sport would be golf as it’s relaxing and good for your overall health.

Why did you choose to study at RGU?

I chose to study at RGU for the physiotherapy programme.

How do you think the sport scholar program will help you progress as a student athlete?

  • Educational seminars,
  • Surrounded by motivational individuals,
  • Academic flexibility,
  • Funding.

What is your greatest sporting achievement?

  • Being Number 1 male power lifter of all time in Scotland.
  • Placing 3rd at u23 British Championships 2025.
  • Placing 2nd at British u18 championships in 2021.

Who is your sporting role model and why?

Jurins Kengamu as he has been in the sport for a long time. Reason is that he has stuck at the sport for a long period of time despite a lot of set backs and subpar performances - the resilience eventually then being rewarded as he came through it and won the world championships.

What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned from your sport?

Patience and resilience. Typically I only compete 2-3 times a year so one bad performance can be difficult to deal with as you can’t just right it the next weekend.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

  • Practicing as a private MSK physiotherapist.
  • Top powerlifter in Scotland.
  • Top 3 Male u83kg in the UK in the open category.
  • Providing online monthly coaching.

Favourite sporting memory?

  • Winning the Scottish junior u83kg championships in 2024
  • Getting a 750kg total to become number 1 ranked in my category in Scotland.
