Meet our Sports Scholars

Maddie Finne

Maddie Finne

Applied Sport and Exercise Science student and Footballer (centre back) from Aberdeen, Scotland.

What is your sport and position?

Football - Defender.

What made you pick your sport?

I started playing with my brother then joined a team and I really enjoyed it.

If you didn’t do your sport, what would you do and why?

Dancing, I started doing it before I played football and liked it.

Why did you choose to study at RGU?

The facilities, rating and rankings were good and I spoke to other people who did the course and they recommend it. I also wanted to stay in Aberdeen for football was key for my football career.

How do you think the sport scholar program will help you progress as a student athlete?

It allows academic flexibility and also looks at other aspects that will help me as an athlete.

What is your greatest sporting achievement?

Playing for Scotland u19 and getting player of the match in a game against Spain, who are one of the best teams, in Euro qualifiers.

Who is your sporting role model and why?

Rachel Corsie, someone who is from Aberdeen, who also went to uni. She shows determination to play football for her country. She also has key qualities that I would like to have in the future.

What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learnt from your sport?

A quote that has stuck with me “setbacks are opportunities for comebacks”. Things might not always go as planned, injuries, not getting picked for things but all the setbacks makes you work harder and want it even more.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Playing professionally in Scotland and looking at playing for teams in England or abroad in the future.

Favourite sporting memory?

Playing at Pittodrie, in front of record fans for our game. Seeing all the children at the end of the game, waiting for us to sign things. It showed we were inspiring the next generation. Or getting to play at Hampden in the semifinals which is a massive achievement for our team. But also playing somewhere where I hope to play at for my country one day.
