Ella Ritchie

Applied Sport and Exercise Science student and Hockey player from Glasgow, Scotland.

What is your sport and position?

Hockey, midfield.

What made you pick your sport?

It was the sport at my new school, so I decided to try it out and loved it.

If you didn’t do your sport, what would you do and why?

Netball, my sisters influence. She loved netball and coached our team at Jordanhill.

Why did you choose to study at RGU?

My cousins went to RGU and recommended it. I went to the open day with my parents and met the sport science lecturers and saw the facilities and loved it!

How do you think the sport scholar program will help you progress as a student athlete?

With the demands of training down in Edinburgh every week, the scholar program has allowed me academic flexibility which eases stress around not being able to complete my assignments to the best of my ability.

What is your greatest sporting achievement?

To be selected for the U21 Womens Hockey team for the Junior World Cup in Santiago 2025.

Who is your sporting role model and why?

I look up to and admire all the girls in the Scotland U21 and senior squads because of the work they put in every week.

What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learnt from your sport?

Hard work and dedication is more important than talent.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

After my experience of a work placement at Hockey Victoria in Melbourne earlier this year I hope to return and find a role in Sports development in Australia.

Favourite sporting memory?

As Captain of Jordanhill School First X1 Womens Hockey team taking them to the final of the Scottish Cup, having never even qualified before that.
