Research culture and research skills at RGU have been voted the best in the country, according to a survey of postgraduate research students.

The University’s results in the annual Postgraduate Research Experience Survey (PRES) survey for 2022 have placed RGU first for Research Culture and Research Skills.

Satisfaction for both of the categories was top out of all 57 of the higher education institutions that took part. RGU was also second for supervision, resources, and support; third for responsibilities; and fourth for progression and professional development.

RGU received an Overall Satisfaction of 86% which places the University fifth nationally, and is the University's best performance in the survey since PRES commenced more than 10 years ago.

The annual PRES survey, conducted by Advance HE, gathers information about the experience of postgraduate research students on doctoral or research master’s courses. The survey explores postgraduate students’ experiences of their supervision, resources, research culture, professional development, and well-being among others.

Professor Nick Fyfe, Vice Principal for Research and Community Engagement, said: “This year’s PRES results for RGU are outstanding. They demonstrate our commitment to giving our doctoral students the best possible experience and support and reflect the hard work and dedication of colleagues across the university with particular thanks going to research student supervisors and members of the Graduate School.

“It is particularly pleasing to see that all the work we have been doing to strengthen the research culture at RGU is being recognised by our doctoral students as is the contribution of our excellent Early Career Researcher Development programme.

“We recently launched our ‘100 projects @RGU’ initiative to attract more PhD students to the university by showcasing potential areas of study, and our excellent PRES results will give future students the confidence that RGU is a great place to study for a PhD.”

RGU’s research is focused around four interdisciplinary themes: Environment, Energy and Sustainability; Health & Wellbeing; Living in a digital world; and Inclusive & Creative Societies.
