Law School congratulated with Scottish Parliament recognition

The motion, put forward by Audrey Nicoll MSP and supported cross-party by many others, applauds the clinic for being ‘the first of its kind in Scotland to offer a holistic service in tackling the root cause of issues that may be contributing to poor mental and physical health’.
It also recognises the upcoming opening as ‘particularly essential during the ongoing cost of living crisis’ and the importance of providing ‘people on low incomes with free, student-led legal services’.
The Grampian Community Law Centre, officially launched last week, will operate from Torry Medical Practice on Oscar Road as well as having a community outreach presence at the Bridge Centre on North Balnagask Road.
Professor Steve Olivier, RGU Principal, said: “The Grampian Community Law Centre’s recognition in Scottish Parliament is great testament to the work that the Law School, and University as a whole, is doing in our commitment to collaborative partnerships.
“Not only will the Centre greatly enhance student experience and engagement, it will also provide a significant service to Aberdeen and its local communities.”
Ms Nicoll, whose constituency office is based in Victoria Road in Torry, said: “I am delighted that the Grampian Community Law Clinic will be based here in Torry, ensuring that local residents will have a service that is both free and accessible.
“I will certainly be looking out for the progress of the Clinic and, once it is fully up and running, look forward to paying a visit to learn more from the volunteers and service users.”
Hannah Darnell (inset), Grampian Community Law Centre Manager, Practising Solicitor and RGU Lecturer, said: “We’re thankful to Audrey Nicoll MSP for her recognition and look forward to following this up with a service which will make a genuine difference to the local community whilst also providing a platform for our students to develop their knowledge, skills and professionalism.
“It’s a great opportunity for all of the partners involved in the Centre and we hope that Torry and the wider community will reap the benefits of our presence.”
The new clinic on Oscar Road is expected to be open to the public later this year while the wider Centre is already assisting people on low incomes with free legal advice across the North-East of Scotland.
