Scholarship opportunities are available for RGU's pioneering Graduate Certificate in Petroleum Data Management – which was designed specifically for the energy industry in partnership with Common Data Access (CDA), the wholly owned subsidiary of OGUK, and was the first of its kind in the world.

Through the RGU Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the university, CDA have funded two scholarship opportunities for the course, which was designed to meet the growing demand within the oil industry for professional petroleum data managers.

RGU jointly developed the course with CDA, a subsidiary of Oil and Gas UK, to develop student’s understanding of subsurface exploration and production data management, emphasising its importance to upstream oil and gas business.

It provides an access route to education in the field of petroleum data management, but has also been designed for those with relevant work experience in the energy sector who would like to have their skills and knowledge developed.

Jo Royle, Head of the School of Creative and Cultural Business at RGU, said: “The course aims to support the industry by providing it with a steady stream of qualified data managers with specific knowledge of the subsurface environment and it is fantastic that CDA is offering two full-funded scholarships to help support this.”

Wonuola Scott, who has just completed the course was awarded the CDA Scholarship last year. He will graduate in the summer and said the course filled the gaps in his knowledge and it helped him explore the discipline beyond his immediate experience of it.

“I have experience working with upstream oil and gas data, although most of this was gained in an unstructured format from years of working in the industry. This Petroleum Data Management course was my attempt to fill the gaps in my knowledge in order to become a well-rounded professional in the data space, as well as get recognition from an institution that is aligned and endorsed by the oil and gas industry.

“I believe my employer will find the new knowledge and skills I have gained very valuable, and could potentially create opportunities for me higher up on the career ladder.”

Daniel Brown, CDA’s Executive Director said: “Data and digital technologies have never been more important to the oil and gas industry. Through this course, energy data managers can build the foundation of critical skills they need to support and lead their companies in this innovative and rapidly evolving area. Good data management lies at the heart of good decision making. Students of this Graduate Certificate are setting themselves on course to make a powerful contribution to their organisation’s success.”

The Common Data Access Ltd Scholarships will be open to any student, worldwide, who has been accepted onto the course and who is in genuine financial need.

Scholarships will be awarded based on selection criteria with more weight placed upon academic merit for new entrants and on an applicant’s employment history and career development for those with industry experience. An awarding panel made up of representatives from RGU and CDA will assess the applications.
