Graduate looks to design a career in the construction industry
A talented student is looking to fulfil his childhood ambitions after graduating with a BSc(Hons) in Architectural Technology from RGU at a ceremony on Tuesday, December 4.

Jack Morrison had always harboured a desire to get into a design-related occupation, after excelling in design and technology while at Harlaw Academy in Aberdeen.

He decided to follow his instinct and enrolled on the Architectural Technology course at RGU’s Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment.

“From my time in school I have always wanted to have a specialised job in some sort of design based industry,” he said.

“I have always been interested in drawing and discovered I had a knack for technical drawing. I applied to my course to see if I could further those skills, with the intention of learning a technical trade.”

One of the highlights of Jack’s time at RGU was the opportunity to travel to Copenhagen in second year, where he and his classmates took part in an international design competition with teams from all over Europe.

“The trip to Copenhagen stands out as one of the best experiences of my time at RGU. As part of the Healthy Housing Awards a Danish university to take part in the design competition. The opportunity was amazing and the chance to network with students of the same course from overseas was extremely enlightening.”

Jack credits the support of the staff at RGU, his mother and girlfriend for helping him make it to graduation.

“I feel elated that I made it all the way through until the end of 4th year unscathed and am looking forward to putting my degree to use.

“I would not have made it through if it were not for my lecturers help and guidance, I feel the advice given then will still apply even when I enter the industry.

"I also owe a big vote of thanks to my mum and girlfriend, who have provided me with invaluable support throughout my degree."

After graduation, Jack is looking to make his mark within the construction industry, putting his degree and the skills and knowledge learned at university to good use.

“My goal is to make it into the construction industry, where I hope to play to my strengths somewhere on the building visualisation side of things, which is becoming more and more important in the sector.

“I feel that the simulated placement term in 3rd year really gave a tangible depiction of what it would be like to work in the industry. I feel completely confident using the software and techniques that the course taught, and as a result, feel I have the skill necessary to enter the workplace.”
