Annie Dyer - BA Photography

Annie Dyer - BA (Hons) Photography
Aberdeen born and raised Annie, draws on her love of floral photography to create a project called ‘Exotica Flowers’, creating beautiful images of flowers and plants using perspective, composition and lighting techniques. She’s also gained invaluable experience throughout University, working as a photographer with Denis Law Streetsport.

With a love of both sports' photography and floral photography, Annie’s goal as a photographer is to capture moments in time. She is intrigued by the captivation of a why a moment is so important and what is its significance? What changes in the moment? Her sense of curiosity never ends.

“The attraction to capturing the moment is very valuable in my practice of sports photography. However, the same could be said about my other practice, floral photography with ICM. Instead of capturing fast motion, the camera is recording smooth motion of movement, presenting a photograph the viewer would be able to see with the human eye. Yet, still presenting a decisive moment. Whilst still questioning, what is the significance?”

"Before starting my course, I discovered ICM flower photography from the Intentional Camera Movement by an Australian photographer, Karen Waller, and was captivated by her work which has inspired my photography project.

“I was so drawn to the creativity and difference of the photograph and couldn't take my eyes off it. With so much inspiration and enthusiasm, I was determined to try it for myself and see what I could produce.

“With support from lecturers and technicians at Gray's, I was able to produce a beautiful portfolio of photographs displaying an ICM technique featuring pink lilies. The project has allowed me to use my creativity as well as look into my other artistic interests such as paintings and art history.

“I am really proud of how the photographs have come out and during my studies. The project has encouraged me to think about why I take photographs. What is there to gain? Who is it for? How do I want someone to feel when viewing my work?”

"Whilst a student I also worked as a photographer with the Denis Law Streetsport team throughout both semesters which has been one of the best experience I've had as a photographer. I've learnt and experienced so much about the creative and working industry through them and am looking forward to future projects together.

“The Dennis Law Legacy Trust Streetsport team have been fantastic and incredibly supportive by providing me with endless opportunities that have allowed me to improve my confidence, teamwork, communication and technical skills. I have gained invaluable experience, doing a sporting photoshoot at different locations with children and volunteers which I know will benefit future projects.”
