Discover groundbreaking Scottish inventions and the innovators behind them in this engaging lunch session. Learn how their legacy inspires fresh ideas today and explore practical steps to create impactful innovations yourself.

Scotland has a remarkable legacy of innovation, with inventions and discoveries that have shaped industries, improved lives, and transformed the world. From Alexander Graham Bell’s telephone to James Watt’s steam engine, from penicillin to television, Scottish innovators have consistently pushed boundaries and redefined what is possible. Their stories show how creativity, perseverance, and problem-solving can lead to world-changing breakthroughs. We’ll take a closer look at some of the country’s most significant contributions, understanding not only what was invented but also how these ideas were developed, commercialised, and scaled to global influence.

This short online lunch session is dedicated to innovation and celebrating Scotland’s first National Innovation Week 2025. Hosted by Aisha Kasim RGU Startup Accelerator Lead in collaboration with Richard Cormack Corrigan Enterprise Executive from Converge, explores the fascinating history of Scottish innovation while inspiring participants to think about their own potential to create meaningful impact.

This workshop is not just about the past - it’s about the future. Alongside celebrating Scotland’s inventors, we’ll explore practical ways that you can harness your own creativity and entrepreneurial spirit through the RGU Accelerator 2026 (now open for applications) and Converge. Whether you’re an aspiring entrepreneur, an early-stage founder, or simply curious about innovation, you’ll gain valuable insights into how ideas grow into solutions, and how solutions can transform into businesses that matter.

Through interactive discussion and real-world examples, you’ll discover:

  • What made Scotland’s most famous inventions so impactful.
  • How innovation often starts with solving everyday problems.
  • The mindset and tools you can adopt to nurture your own ideas.
  • Pathways and support available through RGU Accelerator and Converge to help turn your concepts into reality

By the end of the session, you’ll leave with a deeper appreciation for Scotland’s legacy of invention and, more importantly, the confidence that innovation is not reserved for history books or famous names. It’s something you can be part of today.
