Group Events Manager for OEG
From Studying Abroad in Mallorca to Managing Global Events Worldwide
Morgan Blunt graduated from RGU in 2022 with a degree in International Tourism Management. Now Group Events Manager at OEG, she uses the adaptability, confidence and project management skills developed at university to deliver major international events across the global energy sector.
Do you remember your first day at RGU?
I don’t remember my very first day exactly, but I do remember my first few weeks at RGU. I was excited about everything: meeting new people, exploring new opportunities, and settling into life in Aberdeen. Looking back, it didn’t take long for me to feel at home, both on campus and in the city, and realise I’d made the right choice.
How would you describe the learning environment and support at RGU?
For me, the learning environment at RGU made all the difference to my studies. The modern campus, access to all the resources I needed, and the friendly, supportive staff and lecturers created a really positive learning experience. I always felt encouraged to ask questions, seek support when needed, and make the most of the opportunities available to me throughout my studies at RGU.
Did you take part in any placements, internships, or industry projects during your studies?
I studied abroad during my second year at the University of the Balearic Islands in Mallorca. Moving to a different country and studying in a new environment pushed me well outside my comfort zone, but it helped me grow in confidence and become more independent. I met some great people, experienced a different culture, and returned to Aberdeen with a fresh perspective that really benefited the rest of my studies.
How well do you feel your course prepared you for your career?
My course prepared me well for my career by giving me a broad understanding of business, marketing and communication, alongside other different skills. From doing different presentations, group projects and coursework, I developed confidence, problem-solving abilities, and project management skills that I use every day in my role at OEG. While I didn't go directly into the tourism industry, the knowledge and experience I gained at RGU has all been transferable to a successful career in events.
Tell us about your current role and what a typical day looks like?
I'm currently Group Events Manager for OEG, a leading service provider to the global energy industry, based in our Portsmouth office. No two days are the same in my role, but I spend much of my time planning and delivering a variety of global events, including exhibition stands, networking and launch events, conference appearances, and much more. It's fast-paced and it allows me to work with colleagues and stakeholders from around the world, which is something I really enjoy.
What’s one thing you learned at RGU that still shapes your life or work today?
One thing I learned at RGU that still shapes my life and work today is adaptability. During my time at university, we had to adapt significantly because of the COVID pandemic, with learning moving online and plans constantly changing. It taught me how to be flexible, resilient, and open to change. These are all skills that have been invaluable throughout my career, particularly in the fast-paced world of events.
What’s a career moment you’ll never forget?
A key career moment that I'll never forget will be attending ADIPEC, the world's largest energy conference and exhibition, last year. After months of leading the planning for OEG's exhibition stand, I travelled to Abu Dhabi to deliver the event with the help of our Middle East team. It was a particularly rewarding experience, as ADIPEC was an event I had been aware of since the start of my career, so having the opportunity to attend and be part of it felt like a significant milestone.
What’s one piece of advice you’d give an RGU student today?
One piece of advice I'd give an RGU student today is to stay open-minded, as not everything will go exactly to plan. When I was coming up to graduation and searching for a full-time job, a career in events hadn't even crossed my mind. Looking back, I'm glad I kept an open mind because I now love my job and the opportunities it has given me.
