Tara turned her lightbulb moment into a career she loves, progressing from local authority projects to a senior role at AtkinsRéalis. Find out more about Tara’s career - a journey that was Made at RGU.

Why did you choose RGU?

My career began in events, marketing, and communications, and over time progressed into project management at Swire Energy Services. I was developed into the role and left that business with a lightbulb moment - realising this is where I truly thrive. I then moved to Aberdeen City Council, where I was fortunate to become involved in the Capital Projects delivery, focusing on the Aberdeen City Masterplan. At that point, I decided I needed to strengthen my theoretical knowledge to put it into practice, and I knew that RGU’s Construction Project Management course was exactly what I needed to achieve this.

How well do you feel RGU prepared you for your career?

RGU supported the why while I was delivering the how. It gave me a deeper understanding of the theory behind the scenes, which not only enhanced my knowledge on the job but also strengthened my confidence.

Tell us about your current role and what a typical day looks like?

I am an Associate Director of Project Management within AtkinsRéalis, working as part of the Project and Programme Services stream. My role primarily involves leading project and programme teams, including external multidisciplinary teams, with a strong focus on stakeholder communication—both internal and external. Key aspects of my work include managing resources, ensuring information is relayed to the right people, building effective relationships, and overseeing site delivery.

What are you currently working on or excited about for the future?

My career to date has been far from linear, and I know I am well equipped to pivot or adapt at any point. At AtkinsRéalis, career development and progression are central to our values, and with the global opportunities available, I see myself continuing to grow within the business-strengthening my capabilities and exploring new and different ways of working.

Imagine you’re back at RGU as a guest speaker - what would you love to share with the students?

Take the time to learn and master your soft skills. To be successful within any industry, the way you communicate with others and build relationships will be key to your success. You might know every technical detail under the sun but if you cannot relay it in an appropriate form to your audience, it will lack the conviction needed to build trust with the person receiving the information from you.

If you could describe you and RGU in just one word, what would it be?
