Sustainable travel is essential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, particularly in Scotland, where domestic transport is the largest contributor. RGU aims to achieve net zero emissions by encouraging staff and students to adopt more sustainable travel methods. We promote several initiatives to support this shift, including the use of electric vehicles, car sharing, rail travel, public transport, and cycling.
RGU’s Sustainable Travel Policy prioritises walking, cycling, and public transport, with electric vehicles as an alternative when these options are not feasible. Staff can use RGU’s electric vehicles for business travel at no cost.
In 2023–24, these efforts led to a saving of 1.9 tonnes of CO2 equivalent (tCO2e). Half of the Estates team’s fleet now consists of electric vans. Across campus and other locations, RGU has installed 15 electric vehicle chargers, saving 9,751kg of CO2 in the past year – the equivalent of planting 65 trees.
Car sharing is encouraged through discounted permits and preferential parking spaces. To promote rail travel, RGU offers interest-free season-long loans for staff. The University supports the Under 22s free bus travel scheme and offers discounted tickets through a partnership with First Bus. Cyclists benefit from secure bike storage, shower facilities, and bike libraries with essential equipment. RGU collaborates with organisations including North East Cycle Hub, Sustrans, Tyred N Cranky, and Love to Ride to host events promoting cycling. These initiatives collectively contribute to RGU’s goal of reducing commuting emissions and fostering a culture of sustainable travel.
