Black History Month 2026 Spotlight: Tioluwani Ogunnusi
This Black History Month, we're "Honouring our Communities" by celebrating the people that make RGU such a diverse and welcoming place to study and work.
In this spotlight, Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management student Tioluwani Ogunnusi reflects on the communities that have supported her journey, from student societies to academic networks, and shares why belonging, cultural celebration and connection are so important to the student experience.
This year's Black History Month theme is "Honouring our Communities". What does 'community' mean to you?
Community means having a support system made up of people who encourage, inspire and uplift one another. It is a space where you should feel seen, heard and appreciated for who you are and supported for the growth you need.
As a Black student who has lived in the UK for the past seven years, community has been especially important to me, as it provides a sense of home and belonging while living away from my childhood home.
Which community or communities have shaped your journey the most?
I would say the communities that have shaped my journey the most are the Vizion Society and Kingdom Theatre. Being part of the Vizion Society has made me feel grounded and helped me maintain a healthy balance between my academic, social and spiritual life.
As the Costume Leader for Kingdom Theatre in Aberdeen, I have grown in confidence and become much bolder with communicating and working with different people. The role has helped me develop valuable leadership and teamwork skills.
My academic community has also played a huge part in my journey. The support and encouragement I have received as a Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management student contributed to me receiving the Tommy Award 2025/2026 for Best Stage 2 Quantity Surveying Student, an achievement I am incredibly proud of.
What helps create a sense of belonging for you personally, and at RGU?
One of the things I really appreciate about RGU is its diverse community. Being surrounded by people from different cultures has broadened my perspective and given me opportunities to celebrate and appreciate my own culture and, most importantly, Black culture.
What is one thing you would like people to learn or reflect on during Black History Month?
During Black History Month, I would like people to reflect on the richness, diversity, and impact of Black cultures and communities. For me, Black History Month is about appreciating culture, celebrating achievements, and recognising the contributions that Black people have made and continue to make across society.
What are some actions people can take to help create a more inclusive community?
Creating a more inclusive community starts with being intentional about making people feel welcome and valued. This can be as simple as being open to meeting people from different backgrounds, listening to diverse perspectives, and showing a genuine interest in learning about other cultures.
I really appreciate the role that the RGU Students' Union plays in creating these opportunities and helping students feel connected and represented.
