Celebrating Biomedical Science Day at SPASPH

By Phillippa Hulme, Lecturer - 02 June 2025

The Biomedical Science course team in the School of Pharmacy, Applied Sciences and Public Health (SPASPH) are thrilled to be celebrating Biomedical Science Day on Thursday 5 June with a vibrant lineup of activities and competitions that showcase the creativity, curiosity, and community spirit at the heart of biomedical science.

Biomedical Science Day is all about shining a spotlight on the incredible work of biomedical scientists and inspiring the next generation to explore the wonders of science, something that we are passionate about as a team. Research shows that introducing children to science from an early age helps them to envision themselves as future scientists, fostering confidence, curiosity, and a lasting interest in STEM, so we are dedicated to sharing the role of biomedical scientists to the wider community.

As part of our celebrations, our team are running some biomedical themed competitions.

‘At the heART of Healthcare’ – Drawing Competition for Primary Pupils

We’re inviting primary-aged children to get creative and show us what they think a biomedical scientist looks like! Our drawing competition, titled ‘At the heART of Healthcare’, is a fun and imaginative way to help young minds connect with the world of science and healthcare. We’re excited to see the range of colourful lab coats, microscopes, and maybe even a few superhero capes this year!

STEM-sational Poster Competition – For RGU Biomedical Students

We are running a STEM-sational Poster Competition for RGU students enrolled in Biomedical and Applied Biomedical Science courses! We’re looking for eye-catching, informative posters that shine a spotlight on the vital role of biomedical science in healthcare. It’s a chance for our students to show off their creativity, raise awareness, and win some amazing science-themed prizes! Posters will be presented on Biomedical Science Day at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, where Biomedical Science students will be showcasing to the public the amazing work that biomedical scientists do in healthcare. The stall is free to attend in the Rotunda of the main hospital in ARI on 5th June.

Biomedical Bake Off – Where Science Meets Cake and Art

And for our amazing SPASPH staff, we’re mixing things up with a Biomedical Bake Off! This deliciously creative competition invites staff to bake science-themed cakes that are as educational as they are edible. Think DNA double helix cupcakes, petri dish cookies, or anatomical layer cakes – the possibilities are endless (and tasty)!
