Student-led, fundraising events festival makes return

By Lewis Walker - 27 March 2023

The Aberdeen Student Festival returns this week as four separate events are hosted in the city centre from Thursday through to Saturday night.

The festival has been organised by Stage 3 events management students at RGU, both as part of their course at the School of Creative and Cultural Business as well as to raise money for local charity Aberdeen Cyrenians.

It involves a line-up of student-led, multi-arts and cultural events under the theme of ‘inclusion and opportunities’ with a sub-theme focus of ‘creative connections’.

Those behind the festival have devised the following mission statement for the project to focus on: ‘To create an immersive and inclusive experience whilst raising awareness of Aberdeen Cyrenians. The festival will encompass culture through a programme of events, all linked together in art and culture. Our mission is to ensure social togetherness and opportunities for creative expressions’.

Here, we show off who's involved, talk you through what the different events entail and point to where you can buy your tickets to attend.

Neon Nights at Prohibition, 6.30pm – 9.30pm on Thursday 30 March

The Neon Nights team

Aberdeen Student Festival’s first event is Neon Nights at well-known, late night hotspot Prohibition on Langstane Place. From 6.30pm, the neon-themed night will showcase music from local musicians and DJ’s as well as offering fun games like giant Jenga, ring toss, and beer pong

Night at the Masquerade at the Copthorne Hotel, 7pm – 10.30pm on Friday 31 March

The A Night at the Masquerade team

Next up is a Friday night of food, music and dancing at the Copthorne on Huntly Streety. With a relaxed dress code of ‘that one dress or suit you never wear’, either bring your own mask or buy at the door and get ready to fix up to win a best dressed prize! The evening also includes a two-course buffet and fundraising activities.

Arty Tea Party at BrewDog Castlegate, 12pm – 4pm on Saturday 1 April

The Arty Tea Party team

The weekend begins with an increasingly popular sip and paint type party at BrewDog’s second Aberdeen city bar. The Arty Tea Party aims to capitalise on the North East’s culture of creativity through the likes of Nuart and Spectra, providing a space for similarly creative people to enjoy a painting masterclass accompanied by afternoon tea nibbles and bottomless hot drinks.

A Night O' Jiggin’ at Park Inn by Radisson, 7pm – 10.30pm on Saturday 1 April

The A Night O' Jiggin team

Bringing the festival to a close is a tartan-themed Scottish ceilidh experience at this city centre hotel on Justice Mill Lane. The night will include a live band, traditional ceilidh dances, a bagpiper, fundraising activities, drinks and finger food - all included in the ticket price.

Each event has the same main goal of raising much needed funds for Aberdeen Cyrenians, a local charity that provides care and support for vulnerable people and anyone experiencing homelessness in the North East.
