RGU retains Cycling Friendly Campus

By Kirk Burton, Transport and Sustainability Coordinator - 23 September 2025

RGU has been awarded Cycling Friendly Campus status by Cycling Scotland for the 2nd time following a renewal of the award issued originally in 2021.

In efforts to promote active and sustainable travel, RGU has promoted a number of initiatives to engage staff and students. These have included:

  • Secure cycle storage and shower facilities across campus.
  • Bike hire for students through the Student Union’s BikePad workshop for as little as £20 per semester.
  • Free repairs/maintenance on students’ bikes from BikePad.
  • Cycle to Work scheme where staff can purchase a bike costing up to £3000 through their salary.
  • Staff can claim up to £0.20 per mile if cycling for business travel.
  • Bike libraries at all reception desks where staff and students can borrow locks, lights, pumps or puncture repair kits.

We also have been hosting a number of events on campus over the year, delivered with external partners, including refurbished bike sales, Learn to Cycle sessions, Dr Bike, Cycle maintenance classes and led rides. Our latest event will take place on Tuesday 30 September in the Sir Ian Wood Building as part of Climate Week North East. It will include a bike sale, Dr Bike health checks for bikes and bike marking/security sessions in partnership with North East Cycle Hub, Tyred N Cranky and Police Scotland. You can find out more on our website: Our Campus, Our World.

Chris Walker from Cycling Scotland said:

“Cycling Scotland has worked in partnership with RGU to deliver multiple successful cycling initiatives over the years. It's great to see that there has been continued engagement around cycling and that there is overall a positive cycling culture at the campus.”

These initiatives also resulted in RGU being shortlisted for the 2024 Green Gown awards in the “Creating Impact” category.
