Paul Arnell in Japan

Exploring Japan and extending international research partners

By Lewis Walker - 08 May 2023

Dr Paul Arnell, an Associate Professor at RGU’s Law School, has recently returned from a funded research trip to Japan as part of his interest and expertise in international criminal justice.

Located in central Tokyo, the Nihon University College of Law (NUCL) is one of Japan’s oldest law schools having been established in 1889 by Count Yamada Akiyoshi, Japan’s first Minister of Justice who helped develop the modern Japanese legal code.

Instrumental in the 12-day visit was Professor Toshinobu Kawai who works at the institution. Alongside Dr Arnell, a successful application was made before sponsored funding via NUCL was secured for the trip.

Time was spent meeting members of the NUCL university community; further developing research plans with colleagues; and discovering a new perspective of international higher-education lifestyle and strategy.

In addition to meeting those with an interest in matters related to human rights and international criminal cooperation, Dr Arnell also gave a presentation on some of his current work, entitled ‘The Conflicting Purposes of Extradition’.

A diverse and engaged group attended, including both students and staff, and asked a number of pertinent questions which set the tone of discussion.

Outside of Nihon University, Dr Arnell and Professor Kawai also met with academics from Keio University in Tokyo; Kwansei Gakuin University in Nishinomiya; and Kyoto University and Doshisha University, both in Kyoto.

Speaking about his time, Dr Arnell said: “My trip to Japan was hugely interesting from both an academic and personal perspective. With my colleagues in Japan I now have publication and funding bid plans in the area of international criminal justice”.

In addition to academic work, Dr Arnell also had time in his schedule to visit the Senso-ji temple, walk around the Imperial Palace gardens and to enjoy some sushi and his new favourite dish, yakisoba!
