RGU academic drives forward new Parkinson’s podcast

By David Proctor - 31 January 2023

A senior academic at RGU is helping shed light on the research into Parkinson’s disease with a new podcast.

Julie Jones is the host of the North of Scotland Parkinson’s Research podcast which aims to highlight the work going on to find new treatments.  Julie is working alongside Helga MacFarlane is a member of the research group and lives with the condition.

It is also hoped the podcast will improve the spreading the new about research findings, promote accessibility to research for people living with Parkinson’s and to promote research participation.

The North of Scotland Parkinson's research interest group is made up of a group of volunteers who have Parkinson's or whose lives are affected by Parkinson's, or by people who work with the Parkinson’s community.

Julie said: “Lots of research is happening locally with the aim of finding a cure, improving our understanding of the condition, developing effective treatments and interventions to help those with the condition live well with Parkinson's.  The purpose of these podcasts is to share with the Parkinson’s community current research finding from leading researchers in the field of Parkinson's.

“There are a number of Parkinson's research interest groups throughout the UK, which are all supported by the Parkinson’s UK.  The purpose of the research interest groups is to discuss and share latest research, as well as fund out what research is happening locally.

“Living up in the North of Scotland, attending research meetings can be challenging, so as a group we decided that podcasts may be a way to bring the research to the community.  Therefore, we started a journey of recording podcasts with local and nationally renowned research who work in the field of Parkinson’s.”

Episode one is available to listen to now on Podbean. It features Julie in conversation with Dr Angus Macleod, consultant neurologist with NHS Grampian, who splits his time between his clinical work and an academic role within the School of Medicine, Medical Sciences and Nutrition at the University of Aberdeen. Dr Macleod discusses the impact of this current research on people living with Parkinson’s.

Podcasts are available to access, as released on Podbean, but can also be heard on Amazon Music, iHeardRadio and Podchaser. Listeners are encouraged to ‘follow’ the page on Podbean, to find out when new episodes are uploaded, and to share the podcasts with anyone who has an interest in Parkinson’s.
