Julie Jones

School of Health Sciences

Julie’s success in leading and developing courses that teach industry required skills and knowledge has given her national recognition and ensured her students' employability.

Fit for purpose

Julie’s teaching and learning philosophy is to produce graduates who are fit for purpose and possess the knowledge, skills and attributes required by the modern healthcare environment. This has been consistently achieved and evidenced by 100% graduate employment.

By reorganisation training, she’s removed more than 200 hours from the clinical skills area at RGU for wider university use, which ensures all students get their training in designated training facilities.

Her effective management and enhancement of student selection over the last five years has ensured low attrition, developed consistently high performing graduates and allowed the school to exceed HESA and university KPI targets.

Julie has developed international partnerships and collaborations with KOM recruitment consultants in Canada, McGill and McMaster University and the Canadian Alliance, that improves international recruitment, increasing overseas placement opportunities and enhances accreditation of RGU graduates in Canada.

After leading the implementation of an innovative spiral curriculum, key knowledge, skills and attributes have been threaded throughout modules – resulting in consistently high graduate employment and student satisfaction rates.

Leading success

After successfully leading her team through validation in 2015, Julie led the design of the newly validated, integrated MPhys programme. In this role, Julie has a sustained track record for achieving and exceeding school and university KPIs, with 100% graduate employability and satisfaction.

Julie keeps close working relationships with her staff by providing regular mentorship, clarity and direction in regard to their roles, and responsibilities. She supports them to adopt ‘flip the classroom’ based sessions, where staff facilitate the application of knowledge, rather than focus on the delivery of knowledge. The use of blended approaches to teaching and the use of case and problem-based learning assists students to see the value of their learning through application.

Following peer review, Julie was successfully selected to participate in the Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education programme at RGU. Julie uses this opportunity to engage with the university-wide teaching and learning facilities to share practice, learn from others and disseminate new practice to her team.

There’s more...

As a Chartered Society of Physiotherapy Professional Advisor, Julie provides mentorship to physiotherapy staff at two higher education institutions, providing support with curriculum development, teaching, learning and assessment approaches.

Owing to her interest in Parkinson’s, she has developed a national clinical profile, been instrumental in designing the national exercise framework, and has presented extensively on Parkinson’s nationally.

Julie led the development of the ‘Day in the life of a Physiotherapist course’, which attracts more than 120 local students to RGU to experience physiotherapy practice. This has led to an increase in local students applying and converting to the Physiotherapy course and has increased MD20/40 applications and conversions within the school.

From 2014 to 2016, Julie was responsible for admissions for all courses delivered by the School of Health Sciences. Her management of admissions was commended at the BSc validation and received international recognition at the CAPTE accreditation event.
