Dr Marianthi Leon

Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment

Marianthi joined RGU in 2012, after completing a PhD in Management of Multidisciplinary Collaborations. She leads interdisciplinary R&D, and her vision is a holistic synergy between academia, industry and teaching.

Research excellence

Marianthi has substantially exceeded her income generation targets, being both a lead and co-investigator for a number of projects since 2016 when she started as a lecturer in RGU, in the Aberdeen Business School initially and Scott Sutherland School afterwards.

She led and secured a successful knowledge transfer partnership with a locally based company, Return To Scene. This is a two-year project focusing on transforming the use of visualisations for asset management solutions. Her research on these topics could have a substantial impact on the construction, infrastructure and oil and gas industries, so is developed in close partnership with industry.

Marianthi is also leading a series of Heritage Visualisation projects within Aberdeenshire, for example, in Ballater and in Fraserburgh. Both of these projects develop a number of research and community outputs and they also support extensive dissemination for the university, including presentations to local schools, displays in the new Ballater train station and local engagement events.

Marianthi is also co-investigator on a project led by Dr Leslie Mabon, from School of Applied Social Studies. Funded by the Royal Society of Edinburgh, the project focuses on urban heat island effect with a focus on islanding communities, which is part of a wider public participation and collaboration project to support sustainable urban environments within an international context.

Lastly, her research has a strong interdisciplinary focus that involves ‘projects and ideas’ development across industries, sectors, Schools and universities.

There’s more…

She has been actively implementing her strong vision for an integrated and holistic research and development approach, bringing together industry, academia and communities.

She has also been developing a number of research publications in collaboration with a robust and extensive network she established, both inside and outside of RGU and internationally.

Notably, she has introduced, demonstrated and applied her research expertise in different modules to enrich her students’ learning experience and promote their strategic advantage and individual potential compared to graduates from other Built Environment Schools, while ensuring her teaching focuses on recent developments on the topics for professional relevance.

On top of this, she has actively invited world leading experts to provide research seminars both to students and colleagues on these topics.
