COVID-19: ADVICE FOR STaff, STUDENTS AND COMMUNITY
Widening Access - Clearing

Widening Access - Clearing

We have additional places for Widening Access students on many of our undergraduate courses, as well as free and discounted accommodation and other benefits for those who qualify for additional support. All Widening Access applicants are eligible to receive offers to study with us based on slightly lower grades than advertised.

Here at RGU we believe talented individuals should be encouraged and supported to achieve their ambitions, regardless of their background or economic circumstances.

As part of our continued commitment to widening access to Scottish students, we remain OPEN to new applications through Clearing from applicants who fall into one of the Widening Access groups:

Those from SIMD20/40 postcodes

These applicants are eligible for lower entry grades than advertised and can apply for ACCESS RGU Scholarships. Those within an SIMD20 area also receive an enrolment pack, and SIMD20 applicants from out with Aberdeen City also qualify for free accommodation plus support to attend campus visits and selection interviews.

Use the Scottish Government's SMID postcode checker to see if you qualify.

Those who have attended a Scottish school which has low numbers of students progressing to higher education

These applicants are eligible for lower entry grades than advertised

Those with care experienced status

Those who have been looked after at home, in residential care, foster care or kinship care.

These applicants are eligible for lower entry grades than advertised and can apply for ACCESS RGU Scholarships and receive a 20% discount on RGU accommodation, an enrolment pack, plus support to attend campus visits and selection interviews.

Check if you Qualify

To check if you qualify for widening access and live in an SIMD20 (Quintile 1) or SIMD 40 (Quintile 2) postcode, download the excel file ‘Postcode to SIMD rank (8MB)‘ from the Scottish Government's website:

Enter your postcode in the column indicated:

  • If your home is in a SIMD 20 area it will display a number 1 under the ‘SIMD 16 quintile’ column.
  • If your home is in a SIMD 40 area it will display a number 2 under the ‘SIMD 16 quintile’ column.

If you don’t qualify for Widening Access and would like to find out your options for clearing, visit our Clearing page.
