Ceramics School - Option One: Pottery Wheel Throwing - 4 Day (Foundation | Intermediate  EXTRA)
This course will provide an excellent opportunity to practice throwing and will also cover turning, decorating and applying handles/lids.

Spend 4 days of concentrated study throwing, building and glazing pots at Gray's School of Art. This course is designed to improve your pottery throwing skills and techniques to make finished pieces.

Essential skills will be covered:  

  • Clay preparation
  • Wedging techniques
  • How to centre
  • Throwing: basic cylinders to jugs, vases, plates or bowls
  • Throwing to specific measurements and repeat throwing
  • Turning and finishing
  • Pulling and attaching handles
  • Decorating techniques: applying slips and glazes

You will have the use of your own wheel for the duration of the course. Group demonstrations and one-to-one tuition will be provided.

Any work you wish to keep will be fired and available for collection the following week.

Methods of delivery include: demonstrations, individual/group discussion and studio-based practice.

You are taught by specialist staff who will offer practical advice and instruction together with personal encouragement in discovering individual creative skills. You will receive general instruction and one-to-one tuition tailored to suit your personal level of experience and ability. 

You are encouraged to bring a sketchbook for taking notes

A complete health and safety induction will take place on commencement of the course.

Clothing: the class will be held in the ceramics workshops so you will need to wear sturdy footwear. No sandals, flip flops, heels or crocs are allowed. You are expected to provide apron and/or overalls.

All clay and glaze provided.


This course is not formally assessed.

The Study Support Team provides training and support to all students in academic writing, study skills, maths and statistics, English language and information technology.

Study Skills Support


All enthusiastic students welcome. Suitable for complete beginners or those with prior experience wishing to build their confidence. Tuition will be tailored to participants on an individual basis.

All students are required to be at least 16 years of age on the commencement of the course.


Course fee: £330 (Includes all materials and firing)


A refund is only applicable where there has been illness with a medical certificate to support it.

Gray's School of Art Materials Shop

Located within the Gray’s building, the Art Materials Shop stocks a wide range of specialist materials, papers and equipment for all kinds of creative ventures. Open to all, both student and non-student, with very competitive prices, the staff are on hand and happy to help. Open between 9am-3.30pm Monday to Friday and a selection of dates over each semester to accommodate the Short Course students.

Staff appreciate many Short Course students are busy through the day, so they are happy to take phone orders that can be collected from reception at a later/more convenient time for students.
