This specialised course provides an exploration of a variety of alternative photographic processes.

As a response to increasing interest in the creative possibilities of alternative photographic processes, Gray’s is pleased to continue a specialist course in the subject.

You will be introduced to a variety of darkroom printing techniques that are only possible when working with wet processes.

Course Length

Four weekends (40 hours)
Saturdays: 10.00am - 4.00pm
Sundays: 10.00pm - 2.00pm

You will study processes including Lith and Bromoil, Liquid emulsion, Mordancage and Cyanotypes.

In addition, you will also consider different approaches to image capture and the manipulation of analogue film.

You will aim to produce several small experimental images and a workbook containing detailed notes of experimentations, paper types and test pieces.

Suitable only for those with previous darkroom experience, you are asked to bring a selection of black & white negatives.

Specialist paper will be supplied to cover making several small images in each process.

Those with previous experience in this subject will be encouraged to further explore their chosen processes.

Methods of delivery include: class talks, demonstrations, individual/group discussion and darkroom practice.

You are taught by specialist staff who will offer practical advice and instruction together with personal encouragement in discovering individual creative skills.

You will receive general instruction and one-to-one tuition tailored to suit your personal level of experience and ability.              

A complete health and safety induction will take place on commencement of the course.



This course is not formally assessed.

Previous darkroom experience is essential.

Required Age

All students are required to be at least 16 years of age on the commencement of course excluding the Young Artist programmes.

Gray's Art Shop

Located within the Gray’s building, the Art Shop stocks a wide range of specialist materials, papers and equipment for all kinds of creative ventures. Open to all, both student and non-student, with very competitive prices, the staff are on hand and happy to help. Open between 9am-3.30pm Monday to Friday and a selection of dates over each term to accommodate the Short Course students.

Staff appreciate many Short Course students are busy through the day, so they are happy to take phone orders that can be collected from reception at a later/more convenient time for students.


For new intakes course fees are reviewed and published annually for each mode of delivery. Tuition fees are fixed for the duration of a course at the rate confirmed in the offer letter.  For further information see:
